Arvind Kejriwal bail: SC grants Delhi CM interim relief till June 1
The Supreme Court on Friday granted a conditional bail to Aam Aadmi democratic leader Arvind Kejriwal, valid till June 1, 2024, in the ongoing Enforcement Directorate ED ‘scanning’ of the Delhi Excise Policy scam.
The apex court declined his plea, by means of Supreme Court’s advocate Abhishek Singhvi, of granting him interim bail on June 5, 2015. In addition, the Delhi Chief Minister has been asked to resign on June 2.

Lok Sabha polls are already ongoing (over seven phases) and will finish next month. The day June 1st would be the last day of voting. On April 19, voting commenced in the country and in the third phase elections to more than the 272 seats were completed on May 7. Delhi has the date May 25 set for the voting on the city council elections.
While simultaneously granting interim relief to Kejriwal, the apex court finds that severe allegations have been against Arvind Kejriwal although he has not been convicted till now. “In fact, the Supreme Court, in the bail order, held that ‘there are neither criminal antecedents nor the threat to society that can be created by incarceration’,” said the apex court.

ED, who were investigating the case, contested SC’s ruling for Kejriwal’s interim bail calling it a case of poll strategy and said precedents were not available. Yet, the Judges said that the accused’s bail for the period of 21 days is not likely to bring any substantial difference to the case.

Justice Khanna and Datta, sitting there on the SC bench, noted that Kejriwal was an elected representative, whose present situation was not put together at that time of the entire election campaigns everywhere. Court observed that if elections had not taken place, then it would not have given any interim relief to any party, stressing it that, “the court have no intention to interfere in the working of the government.
