Inspiring story of Hima Das: Her achievements in Asian Games


When the 400m race of IAAF world U20 Championship started Hima Das, with the hope of more than 125 crore Indians run over the track. On that day, Hima Das did something which was never done before by a female Indian athlete. In Finland, Hima was running on the 4th lane. Most of the time Hima was not even among the first 3 athletes but when the finishing line came closer Hima did something magical and the 18-year-old girl made history by completing the race in 51.21 seconds. She won the gold for our country. Let us take a look at the inspiring story of Hima Das.

 

Inspiring story of Hima Das

Hima gave the country a reason to celebrate as she became the first Indian to win a gold in tracks event on an international level. Even the most popular athletes, the flying Sikh of India, Milkha Singh and P.T Usha also missed the win during their times. Also, Hima became the first woman to win a gold at IAAF World Championship.

Inspiring story of Hima Das 

Hima Das belongs to a small town of Assam in Nagano district. She was born in the family of farmers. Hima said that she had never thought of being into athletics during her childhood but she was very fond of playing football. She used to play football in the fields with other boys.

She wanted to be a well-known striker. Though by observing her potential in running, someone suggested her to make her career in athletics. Hima started with regional level competitions. In January 2017 during Guwahati camps, Hima came into the sight of athletics coach Nipon Das. He, with a lot of efforts, convinced Hima’s family to allow her to prepare for games by being in Guwahati. Nipon Das admitted Hima into a state level sports Academy. Earlier, Hima started with preparing for 200m race, then she engaged herself into 400m races.

Achievements 

In April, during the state level games, Hima bagged 6th position by completing the race in 51.32 seconds. She made a record score among U20 India. Hima bagged 7th position in a relay race of 4*400m in Guwahati, with 51.13 seconds and improved her scores during state championships.

Hima is all set for the Asian games

Hima stormed into the finals of 400m race event of the ongoing Asian games 2018 clocking the time of 51 seconds breaking her personal records in Jakarta on 25th August. She finally bagged silver medal in the event. Not just Hima Das broke her personal record, but she has also set a new national record of 51 seconds in the women’s 400m track events.

Hima said,” what I have learned from my training I will apply at the Asian Games. I want to give the best timing, not just win a medal. I run after time and think about how I can improve my timing.”
