India Coach Hits Back On Asia Cup Selection Controversies: Sitanshu Kotak Explains Team Decisions and Player Roles
India men’s batting coach Sitanshu Kotak has addressed the ongoing debates surrounding the Asia Cup selection, firmly denying any favoritism or hidden agenda in the team’s composition. Responding to questions about Arshdeep Singh’s absence in India’s opener against the UAE, Kotak emphasized that the choices made are purely strategic, aiming for what is best for the team’s performance. The squad picked only one specialist pacer in Jasprit Bumrah, along with two specialist spinners and three all-rounders, a decision that ultimately proved effective on a slow, spinning track. India bowled out the UAE for just 57 runs and secured a comfortable nine-wicket victory.
Kotak explained that selection discussions are first held between the head coach Gautam Gambhir and captain Suryakumar Yadav, with the entire team understanding that these decisions are in the best interest of the team. “If any player is not playing, it will be difficult for him because he will feel left out. But, at the end of the day, it’s a team sport. Everyone knows that there is no agenda, there is no personal liking, disliking. Whatever is best for the team, the captain and head coach will decide and do that. And I don’t think there is any doubt in anybody’s mind,” Kotak stated. He also highlighted that those who are not in the playing XI actively support the starters, maintaining team morale and cohesion.

Another point of discussion has been the adjustment of Sanju Samson in the batting order. Samson, who had been performing well as an opener prior to the Asia Cup, was shifted to the middle order following the inclusion of Shubman Gill and vice-captaincy responsibilities. Kotak clarified that such decisions are based on team requirements rather than individual preference. “Sanju has not batted a lot at No. 5 or 6. But that doesn’t mean that he can’t do it. According to the requirement of the team, the captain and head coach will decide. He is more than happy to bat at any number,” Kotak explained.
Kotak further added that India’s batting line-up is flexible, with every player capable of stepping in at any position to finish a match. This adaptability allows the team to make tactical adjustments without disrupting the balance of the squad. “Although we have four-five aggressive players, the head coach or captain can decide according to the situation. More or less, everyone is prepared to bat at any number. Sanju, in the last match, would have batted at number 5. In the next match, he can bat at any number. Everyone knows their role and will be ready according to the situation,” he said.
The India coaching staff’s approach demonstrates a focus on collective success rather than individual performances, ensuring that each player understands their responsibilities while remaining adaptable. Kotak’s comments underline that the team operates without favoritism, with decisions driven by strategy and the match situation.
India’s second match in the Asia Cup group stage will be against arch-rivals Pakistan, a game that promises high intensity and requires precise planning. With the coaching staff emphasizing adaptability and team-first mentality, every player is expected to contribute wherever they are needed. Kotak’s reassurances aim to quell any doubts among fans and critics regarding the selection policies, reinforcing the message that India’s squad is unified, prepared, and focused on winning the tournament.

The Asia Cup has already sparked debates about selection choices, but the Indian team’s strategy in the opener demonstrated the effectiveness of the decisions. Kotak’s comments reflect the team’s disciplined approach, where tactical adjustments and collective effort remain central to India’s quest for success in the tournament. The upcoming clash against Pakistan will further test the team’s flexibility, but with players ready to adapt and the coaching staff committed to strategic planning, India enters the match with confidence and clarity of purpose.
