On Thursday July 10, 2025 people in India and other countries will celebrate Guru Purnima. In the Hindu month of Ashadha this full moon day (Purnima) is devoted to honoring gurus and teachers who demonstrate the path of wisdom education and spirituality.

Drik Panchang states that the Purnima tithi or full moon phase lasts from 2:05 PM on July 9 to 4:00 PM on July 10.
This indicates that since the full moon is visible on July 10 Guru Purnima will be observed on that day.
On July 10 people typically perform the Guru Purnima puja in the morning.
Guru Purnima: Why Do We Celebrate It?
The day honors the Mahabharata’s author Guru Vyas who is thought to have been born on this day. Many also use the occasion to honor those who have mentored or taught them throughout their lives.
The scriptures state that the ultimate guide who guides you to the truth is Brahma Vishnu and Mahesh.
Guru Purnima is also a day for reflection, quiet and the beginning or resumption of spiritual activities in spiritual communities. Visits to ashrams, offerings of flowers and sweets and paduka puja (worship of the gurus sandals) are common among devotees.

To celebrate Guru Purnima you don’t need a lavish setup. Here is an easy method for doing the puja at home.
- After an early morning take a bath.
- Place a picture or a symbol of your teacher or guru there after cleaning the puja area.
- Serve sweet incense and yellow or white flowers.
- If you know the Guru Stotra or Guru Gita, recite it.
- For a few minutes sit quietly or light a diya and practice meditation.
Additionally some people observe a basic Sattvic diet or fast throughout the day.

Guru Purnima: Who Can See It?
This day is celebrated differently by many Indian religions including Buddhism, Jains and Hinduism.
According to Buddhism this day at Sarnath is when Lord Buddha is said to have delivered his first sermon.
According to Hindu tradition it is one of the most auspicious days to begin a spiritual journey and is associated with Ved Vyasa.
According to Jainism Gautam Swami was the first disciple of Lord Mahavira on this day.
