Small birds have double vision faster than humans

Researchers at the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences, Uppsala University and Stockholm University in Sweden studied the ability to solve the visual details in time in three small passerine wild species – blue tit, flycatchers’ neck and flycatchers.

Capacity is the temporal resolution of sight, i.e the number of updates per second to an animal is able to perceive. It can be compared with spatial resolution (visual acuity), a measure of the amount of data per degree field of vision, the researchers said.

They are prepared for wild birds captured for a food reward, distinguishing between a pair of lamps, flicker and brightness of a constant light.

The temporal resolution is then determined by increasing blink rate to a threshold at which the birds could no longer count the other lamps.
