Alfa Romeo Spider- It’s Back With A Bang

People were immensely impressed when Alfa Romeo unveiled the look of 4C at last year Geneva Motor Show. The only thing that would have made it stunning would have been to chop off its roof and make it a convertible. Alfa felt the same way when it made its debut at this year’s Geneva Motor Show. Temporarily the car is called Spider Design Preview.

Back in time, chopping of roof was not a concern because the cars were based on chassis and so roof wasn’t structural, it was just there to keep sun, rain, dust etc. out of the car. But now the technique behind construction of cars has made the roof essential element of the vehicle. Chop it off and the car would wobble on roads like jelly on a plate.

But Alfa says that Spider won’t suffer through such structural shortcomings because of its rigid hard top. In fact, the extra bracings needed to make up for losing the roof will only add 60kgs to car’s overall weight and would have minute impact on its performance. It can still go from 0 to 62mph (100km/h) in just 4.5 seconds and top speed is in excess of 155mph (250km/h).

Along with bracings, it has an advanced interior designing. The hardtop version is a wonderful car to drive. But in order to cut down weight to the bone, some of the materials that are used to design the cabin seem to be very cheap despite the car’s exorbitant price tag.

Now as this car would showcase its cabin area, Alfa has used carbon fibre to add style, increase strength and maintain the weight. Apart from all this, another add on of Spider is its new set of alloy wheel.
