You’ve spoken openly about fear — what went through your mind the first time you thought, “What if people don’t accept me?”
Answer: The first thought was fear — not because I doubted myself, but because society isn’t always kind. I found myself wondering how much explaining I’d have to do, and whether people would try to define me instead of truly understanding me. It wasn’t a fear of who I was, but a fear of how I’d be seen. Acceptance from others is unpredictable, and that uncertainty can be intimidating.
Did you ever try to change yourself just to feel accepted?
Answer: No — I didn’t. I realised early that changing myself would only delay the truth. When acceptance comes after pretending, it’s not real acceptance. I wasn’t seeking permission to exist; I was simply being honest about who I am. That honesty, however challenging, was worth far more than fitting into someone else’s idea of “acceptable.”
Did self-acceptance happen quickly, or did it require external support?
Answer: It took time, but it always began with me. Self-acceptance doesn’t happen overnight — it’s a gradual process of being patient with yourself. Yes, support from others feels good, but it can’t be the foundation. I learned that knowing and accepting myself from the inside out was the only way to stay grounded, regardless of outside reactions.
If you could go back, what would you tell your younger self who was scared to come out?
Answer: I’d tell him to breathe. To stop rushing the process. And to remember that his truth is valid even if the world takes time to catch up. You don’t need everyone to understand you — you just have to start by understanding yourself. Clarity begins from within.
What kept you going during moments when acceptance felt distant?
Answer: Self-belief kept me going. So did creativity, work, and a handful of people who truly saw me. I often reminded myself that my identity isn’t up for debate — it’s simply who I am. Knowing that was enough to keep moving forward, even on the tough days.
Aakash Aggarwal’s story reminds us that acceptance isn’t a finish line — it’s a personal journey. One that starts not with others, but with how we see ourselves.
