Modern Family’ Star Aubrey Anderson-Emmons Comes Out as Bisexual with Nostalgic Tribute to Her Character Lily Tucker-Pritchett

Aubrey Anderson-Emmons, who portrayed the adorable Lily Tucker-Pritchett on the hit TV series Modern Family, has come out as bisexual in celebration of Pride Month. The 18-year-old actress made the announcement on June 16 with a nostalgic and heartwarming social media video that really paid homage to her favorite TV character and won hearts across the internet.

In a clip she shared playfully on Threads, Anderson-Emmons lip-synced to a memorable scene from Modern Family, in which a young Lily informs her parents that she’s gay. In the scene, Gloria (Sofía Vergara) reminds her, “You are Vietnamese,” to which Lily cheekily responds, “No, I’m not. I’m gay, I’m gay!” Mitchell (Jesse Tyler Ferguson), Lily’s TV dad, then replies in the end, in a confused, “Honey, no, you’re not gay. You are just confused!” Bringing that line opened, Anderson-Emmons overlays the whole video with the caption, “People keep joking so much abt me being gay when I literally am (I’m bi),” thus making her not-so-secretive proclamation of bisexuality clear.

She was met by love, acceptance, and emotional memorials directed toward her on-screen parents, Mitchell and Cameron, as played by Jesse Tyler Ferguson and Eric Stonestreet, in the comments section: “Omgggg Cam and Mitch would be so happy 😭🎀💅🏻,” one fan wrote. Others echoed something similar: full circle moment, praising the young actress for living her identity openly.

Replacing twin actresses Ella and Jaden Hiller, who initially shared the role of Lily in the Modern Family cast, Anderson-Emmons began acting in Season 3. She quickly attracted fans as the intelligent and witty daughter of Mitchell and Cameron. Widely recognized for its groundbreaking representation of a same-gender couple parenting a child, the show concluded in 2020 after 11 successful seasons.

The fans once dreamed of making a Modern Family spin-off in which Mitchell, Cam, and Lily would follow in their new life in Missouri after moving at the end of the show. In a statement later confirmed by Stonestreet in 2024, that idea was now scrapped, despite a completed script from co-creator Christopher Lloyd and a writing team. “They had their chance,” Stonestreet shared, disappointed that the spinoff never came to be.

Now 18, Aubrey Anderson-Emmons is looking for things outside acting that excite her. Recently, she stepped into the world of music, releasing indie-pop songs under the name Frances Anderson. This developmental stage of her artistry is exciting for her followers from way back in childhood on ABC.

Anderson-Emmons’ revelation during Pride Month serves as an important reminder of the need for authentic self-expression as she confidently enters adulthood. In making this announcement, she has joined the growing throng of young public figures who in this age are proudly revealing their identities and preparing for more massive acceptance and visibility for the LGBTQ+ community.
