48-hrs of Rail Roko: Cauvery water dispute :- The rail services in the state may get affected on Monday and Tuesday as the major political parties are expected to lead a statewide 48-hour Rail Roko march to urge the Centre government to immediately constitute the Cauvery Management Board.

Parties, such as the DMK, Congress, PWA, TMC, Dravidar Kazhagam, traders and different Tamil councils of the state are participating in this protest which is called by the farmers’ organisations.

Reason behind the Protest

The protest has been called against the Centre’s stand presented in the Supreme Court against the establishment of the Cauvery Management Board and to urge the state government to immediately hold an all-party meeting to discuss this issue. DMK has already asked its functionaries and cadres to participate in the rally.

The farmers have decided to hold the protest between the Bhoodhalur and Thiruvidaimaruthur, in the Thanjavur district and in-between the Thanjavur railway junction and Kilovenni section. The Tamil Manila Congress leader GK Vasan announced that he will be participating in the second day of the protest in Thanjavur while CPI state secretary R Mutharasan stated that he would attend the protests on both days along with the cadre.

The District-level functionaries of Congress, DMDK, MDMK, CPM, VCK, Naam Tamilar Katchi, Manithaneya Makkal Katchi, Dravidar Kazhagam and all other members of the farmers association will be in attendance.

Schedule of the protest

Protests will take place at different railway stations including the Fort, Srirangam, Thiruverumbur, Poongudi, Uthamakoil in Trichy district during the first day of the protest.

The south district secretary of DMK and former minister KN Nehru will lead a protest at the Srirangam railway junction. While on the second day, Rail Roko will be held in the Trichy Town, Palakkarai, Pettaivaithalai and the Manapparai railway stations.

Apart from this, the farmers have decided to stage the protests in different places across the state. DMK in Karur district has planned to stage the Rail Roko at Kulithalai station on Tuesday and the district functionaries have been called upon their cadre to participate in a huge numbers.
