Warren Buffett Biography- Investing Genius, Philanthropist, and American Icon.

Warren Buffett's legacy extends far beyond his financial achievements. He is admired for his humility, integrity, and plainspoken wisdom, becoming a revered figure not just in the investing world, but globally.

Warren Buffett Biography: Life, Investments, Wisdom of the Oracle Investor

Warren Edward Buffett, who was born in Omaha, Nebraska on August 30, 1930, has become one of the most successful people in the world of investing and philanthropy. Investors call him the “Oracle of Omaha” because his life shows how powerful compound interest and disciplined investing are.

His business-minded thinking appeared early on in his life. At six, he would go door-to-door selling chewing gum and by eleven, he already began buying stocks. Entrepreneurial work continued for Palmer during his teens, with delivering newspapers and by age 14, he filed taxes on his own. Early on, Sam learnt about business and developed a sharp sense of what opportunities to take.

Even though Edsel was drawn to business, his father pushed him to attend university. At first, he attended the Wharton School, but then he opted to finish his studies and receive his degree at the University of Nebraska at age 19. His path through academia was shifted when he found and read Benjamin Graham’s “The Intelligent Investor.” Buffett also got a Master of Science in economics from Columbia Business School, where he worked with Graham, who helped him stick to value investing.

Following his education, Buffett improved his abilities by being partners with Graham and other individuals. In 1956, Buffett established Buffett Partnership Ltd., a company he operated as a sole investor. 1965 marked a key time in Buffett’s career, when his company bought the troubled textile manufacturing company, Berkshire Hathaway. Buffett did not attempt to keep Berkshire Hathaway in textiles; he converted the company into a holding business that owns many other businesses. By 1970, Jardine was made both the chairman and majority shareholder of Jardine, a role he holds to this day.

The partnership with Charlie Munger, who joined as vice-chairman in 1979, accelerated the growth and success of Berkshire Hathaway. Buffett’s investment philosophy is centered on a long-term approach, the intention to understand the underlying businesses, the willingness to buy companies with a significant competitive advantage (or “economic moat”), and he famously stated “Be fearful when others are greedy and greedy when others are fearful”. This contrarian approach combined with being patient and understanding the benefits of compounding over time, enabled him to generate tremendous returns from Berkshire Hathaway, which began in the early 1960s.

As an investor, Warren Buffett is not just one of the greatest investors in history, but he is also a great philanthropist. He has pledged to give away the vast majority of his great wealth, mostly through the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, but also to foundations run by his children. At the time of writing (May 2025), Warren’s net worth is over $160 billion so he is one of the richest people in the world. His letters to Berkshire Hathaway shareholders are highly anticipated and widely read, because they contain both financial wisdom, as well as wisdom on leadership, ethics, and life.
