World Lung Cancer Day: Inspire, Educate, Support

The world community is getting ready to celebrate the world lung cancer day on the 1 st of August, which is another very important effort aimed at increasing awareness of the devastating effect lung cancer has on the human world. The event is very crucial to inform the world about risk factors and shed light on early detection, improved treatment, advocacy, and provide reference to the people suffering this ubiquitous disease. As lung cancer continues to be one of the cancer killers globally, one cannot say too soon to occur this day.

Silent Threat- What it is about-

In most cases lung cancer advances without causing complications, and hence it is usually undetectable in its beginning phases. Some of the symptoms like persistent cough, shortness of breath, chest pain, and unexplained weight loss may be confused with less serious symptoms thus delaying diagnosis and remedial action. This is why there is an urgent necessity to inform more about such warning signs. Although the most serious risk factor is the fact that a person is a smoker, it is also imperative to keep in mind that smoking is not a single factor when lung cancer is concerned, since a non-smoker is susceptible to this disease as well, due to exposure to radon gas, second-hand smoking, air pollution and occupational hazards.

The Strength of Stopping and Early Detection-

Prevention is the key in minimizing the cases of lung cancer. The best thing that people can do is quit smoking and do not expose themselves to any secondhand smoke. Smoking ceasing campaigns are essential in the public health. With high-risk people, people with long histories of smoking, low-dose CT (LDCT) screening has been found effective as part of an early find measure. Although this disease still inflicts considerable damages, early detection of the disease at an earlier and more treatable stage is a great step towards enhancing patient experiences and survival. The world lung cancer day actively propagates these prevention practices and screening standards.

Progress in Treatment and Research-

The progress in the treatment of lung cancer over the past few years has been overwhelming. More than chemotherapy and radition, there are targeted therapies and immunotherapies that allow for more targeted and individualized treatment, and all with less side effects for many patients. Ongoing research and commitment to understanding the molecular details of lung cancer is how we are able to celebrate the advances in lung cancer treatment on World Lung Cancer Day. This day brings much hope, and the continued hope to one day finding a cure.

Support, Advocacy, and Hope-

Besides treatment, World Lung Cancer Day emphasizes support systems for patients and their families. We know that lung cancer affects the lives of patients and their families in numerous ways, physically and emotionally. Support groups, counseling and palliative care are essential in improving a patient’s quality of life while living with lung cancer. It is also a day in which we call for advocacy to promote policymakers’ and global health organizations’ support for lung cancer research, greater access to lung cancer screening programs, and equitable access to new treatments. Together on this day, we can affirm our responsibility to lessen the burden of lung cancer, and provide a ray of hope for all those affected.
