Smile Over Botox? Study Finds Natural Expression Beats Injectables in Attractiveness

Botox may offer a slight boost in looks, but smiling can make you far more attractive, according to new research. Confidence and warmth win hearts.

Botox Might Raise Your Face Value, But Smiling Naturally Makes You More Attractive, Study Suggests

For decades, Botox has remained the most revered remedy to reduce wrinkles and fine lines as it guarantees a youthful appearance. Given the injectable trend adopted by celebrities like Nicole Kidman and Meghan Trainor, it is not a surprise that Botox has been incorporated into beauty routines by millions. But reports say that despite Botox’s rising fame, overtaking the world’s ever-increasing demand for any injectable cosmetic enhancement, the real ingredient to attractiveness might not lie inside a syringe but in something far simpler and free: a genuine smile.

Per the study from Tilburg University in the Netherlands, published in Perception, Botox users actually do possess a little increased visual appeal. When 3,000 people were evaluated before-and-after photo ratings for 114 participants who underwent Botox and dermal filling, the number tipped toward improvement by only 0.07 points on a 7-point attractiveness scale. Likewise, subjects rated the participants as appearing slightly younger post-treatment, an improvement of 0.13 points on the perceived youthfulness measure.

But these slight changes were far outweighed by the poor changing power of one natural expression. That same study reported that smiling lifted someone’s level of attractiveness by 0.4 points-six times greater than the effect of Botox. This means a warm, genuine smile goes much further for one’s image than a $300 injection. In fact, makeup scored even higher than Botox in this study, giving participants a 0.6-point boost in attractiveness.

Nevertheless, it wasn’t just good looks. Botox didn’t significantly improve confidence or competence or intelligence or charisma or friendliness or trustworthiness, he continued. A short-lived pleasure and a casual friend got a slight boost of 0.09 points under Botox in their appeal, while in long-term romantic matters, it was zero.

According to Dr. Bastian Jaeger, co-author of the study, these findings underscore an important insight: Botox may give you a smooth surface, but it does nothing to enhance the depth of people’s perception of you. Smiling, on the other hand, communicates warmth, approachability, and self-assurance; qualities that are significantly more valuable when it comes to developing lasting relationships.

Interestingly, even so, the small aesthetic rewards derive patients’ confidence. Many report feeling confident and socially successful avenging Botox treatment. Dr. Jaeger believes this might be a kind of placebo effect: If people think they look better, they tend to act more confidently, which helps them socially. It is more about the mindset than the face.

So, when contemplating Botox for raising attractiveness, think this: With one single free, genuine smile, you will unlock your beauty more than any cosmetic enhancement could. The world can only applaud a smile that is natural and scientifically proven to work. Smiling may just be the most underrated agent of beauty in an industry that glorifies outer skin!
