Religious Importance of Sawan Somvar Vrat

The month of Sawan, or Shravan, has a highly religious significance in the Hinduism. It is said to be one of the most auspicious months of the Hindu calendar, especially for the devotees of Lord Shiva. Among the various rituals celebrated during this sacred time, the Sawan Somvar Vrat-fast on Mondays of the Sawan month-is particularly popular, being one of the most venerated customs.

The Mondays are dedicated to Lord Shiva, and the power of worship and seeking blessings on such days is strongly felt if it falls in the holy month of Sawan. Turned into a day of fasting, devotees earnestly seek blessings from Lord Shiva for the prosperity, peace, good health, and the bliss of a marital life. Moreover, among unmarried girls, this vrats is also said to be a way of attaining a suitable life partner like the penance and immense devotion that Goddess Parvati took up to Lord Shiva.

Mythological Belief Behind Sawan Somvar

As per Hindu Mythology, the month of Sawan marks the period when Lord Shiva drank the dreadful poison, “Halahala”, which came out during the churning of the ocean (Samudra Manthan) to save the universe. The poison raised his body temperature, and devotees began offering him water for relief and performed the divine ceremony of “Abhishekam” with milk, curd, honey, and ghee; the same ritual continues to this day in the Sawan Somvar Vrat.

It also believed that during this month Goddess Parvati did severe penance and fasting on Mondays to get Lord Shiva as her husband, and he accepted her as his consort because of her unwavering devotion. To this day, the Sawan Somvar is very important for women desiring marital happiness and blessings.

Rituals and Puja Vidhi of Sawan Somvar Vrat

The Sawan Somvar Vrat is carried out in spiritual purity and discipline. Women usually keep the fast all day, from early dawn until evening, depending on their physical strength and customs.

Devotees wake up early, take a bath, and wear clean clothes. The Puja Vidhi begins by cleaning the statue of Shiva or the Shiva Linga with water, milk, and other holy liquids such as ghee, honey, and curd. This whole washing ceremony is called “Abhishekam.” After that, flowers, bel patra (also called bilva leaves), white sandalwood paste, and fruits are offered to Lord Shiva.

Chanting of Shiva mantras like “Om Namah Shivaya,” reading of Shiva Chalisa, and recitation of the Sawan Somvar Vrat Katha are also integral to the observance of this ritual. Many devotees visit nearby temples of Shiva to offer their prayers and seek divine blessings from him.

Some people are very strict and have a fast, consuming only water-they may break their fast in the evening after performing another puja. Others may drink fruit juice or have some fruit or milk. After the puja is over, the fast will be broken.

Spiritual and Personal Benefits of Observing the Fast

The observance of the Sawan Somavar Vrat is therefore not an end in itself–profound spiritual benefits arise through the fasting and prayer for the cleansing of body and mind, concentration, or spiritual awareness. The devotees believe that by dedicating their time to Lord Shiva during Sawan, they can wash away all their past sins and karmic debts.

For married women, such a fast brings in marital harmony, and for unmarried girls, it is alleged to wash away the hurdles in the way of their marriage. This vrat is also observed by men to attain peace, success, and blessings for their family.
