June sees the United States rejoice in rose fragrances as we celebrate National Rose Month. While it is known for its beauty, the rose is loved in America for standing for love, beauty, patriotism and steadfastness. Its position as the national symbol for flora in the United States was secured by President Ronald Reagan in 1986.

The history of the rose in the United States is as full and intricate as the rose’s petals. Rose species native to America were admired here for ages before early European settlers appeared. Often, one petal single-petaled and strong, native flowers gave us both beauty and benefits in medicine. With Europeans and Asians moving into the Americas, new plant varieties from their homelands introduced a fun exchange and created a much greater diversity of roses. In colonial estates and on pioneer farms, roses were soon treated as a necessary element of any yard.

Besides being beautiful, roses are an important part of American culture. Flowers are traditionally used for love, appearing at weddings, on anniversaries and on Valentine’s Day. The use of music at graduations and proms is a tradition of moving into adulthood. Their dedication and commitment to passion keep this beloved flower alive and we enjoy the changing and expansion of rose growers by hybridizers. More importantly, this is a cordial reminder of the art and science that goes into making beauty with plants.
