Naturally repel pigeons: 5 easy tricks for your balcony
If you're looking for humane and natural ways to reclaim your balcony, here are five simple tricks to keep these feathered invaders at bay.
No More Pigeons: 5 Natural Tricks to Keep Them Away
Pigeons may stand for peace, but they can soon create problems if they like using your balcony as a favorite spot. Their waste is unpleasant to see, corrosive and can hold diseases as well.
1. Add a Reflective Object:
A quick flash or movement can quickly frighten a pigeon. You can highlight this effect by putting up reflective objects there. Old CDs, bits of aluminum foil or specially made reflective tapes can help a lot. Hang the Windchimes up to watch them spin and shimmer when the wind blows. Regularly shined rays of light will disturb and confuse pigeons which will not find your balcony comfortable. Making a path using this method saves money, helps the environment and adds a fun design to your yard.
2. Make the Best of Scents.
These birds can smell things very strongly and some scents make them very upset. Control this by bringing in scents that bugs naturally avoid.
* Chili powder, black pepper or cinnamon powder can be sprinkled on your railings and ledges since they have an overwhelming smell. The scent in the area will stop moths from wanting to land.
There are a few essential oils you can use for this such as peppermint, eucalyptus or tea tree. Frequently spray this remedy on places pigeons like to land. Pigeons do not like the sharp aroma from rosemary but humans usually enjoy them.
* Vinegar or Garlic: Putting a diluted vinegar solution or crushed garlic cloves in small dishes is a possible way to keep them away. The strong smell itself makes them less likely to be eaten. After rain or every several days, put more deodorant on to help it continue working properly.
3. Eliminate Food and Water Sources:
This perhaps is the most fundamental step in pigeon control. Pigeons are opportunistic feeders: if your balcony offers a dependable food source, they keep coming back.
* Cleanliness is Key: Sweep and clean your balcony daily, making sure that no scraps of food, crumbs, or pet food remain exposed. Even tiny morsels like few seeds from plant pots may attract them.
* No Water: Remove any standing water, say in saucers under plant pots or birdbaths (if you are not purposely attracting other birds). Pigeons need water like any other creature, and preventing their access to water will encourage them to search for it elsewhere.
4. Implement Physical Barriers (not So Obvious):
Though bird spikes and netting do work well, they can be visually unappealing. For a more organic solution, try using some less obvious physical barriers:
Tight Wires or Fishing Lines: Install thin, tight wires or fishing line on your balcony railing, just a few inches above the surface. Pigeons have difficulty landing on unstable or narrow surfaces, so the invisible barrier will make them uncomfortable.
Characters or Spiky Plants: Place potted plants with prickly or heavy foliage (cactus or some of the ornamental bushes) on your railing or on corners where the pigeons are likely to roost. The birds will encounter discomfort and not return.
5. Use Visual Scares (go for variety):
Pigeons have an innate fear of predators. You can’t have a real hawk sitting on your balcony, but you can use visual cues that mimic predators or provide a stressful environment for the pigeons:
Wind Chimes: The unexpected movement and sound from wind chimes can easily startle pigeons and possibly make them think twice about landing. Choose wind chimes that have a clear and distinct sound.
