Raise A Glass And Celebrate The Spirit On National Tequila Day

The day of National Tequila Day which falls on the 24th of July every year is a drinking day where Mexico celebrates its national drink of tequila. Although not a day off, it is a day of celebration known by all fans to rise a glass to toast the history, culture of tequila and also the numerous tastes of tequila.

The history of National Tequila Day is a bit casual, but it has gained a lot of prominence specifically in the US, the largest tequila importer in the world. The date alone is reported to have become more popular about 2006 when the Jardin des agaves of Tequila, Mexico was made a UNESCO World Heritage Site on July 24th making further association with the drink. Interestingly, there is also a Mexican official National Tequila Day developed by the Mexican senate in 2018 and celebrated on the third Saturday of every March.

Tequila is not only a fun drink, but it is actually a sign of centuries of Mexican culture and art.  Real tequila should be produced using at least 51% of blue agave (Agave Tequilana Weber Azul) and it can only be manufactured in the state of Jalisco, Mexico, and four municipalities in Guanajuato.

When celebrating the national tequila day, it is usually done by consuming tequila in its numerous forms. The classic Margarita has always been a prized cocktail, with a perfect expression of tequila, lime, and orange liqueur. Other cocktails that are popular include the Paloma (tequila and grapefruit soda), Tequila Sunrise and Tequila Sour.

Many beverage professionals will also choose to sip on aged tequila – a reposado, añejos, and extra añejos neat or on the rocks – similarly to fine whiskey and other spirits, and enjoy it for its complexity and smoothness attributes.

Outside of cocktails, the day is also a chance to explore tequila’s culinary versatility. Tequila can pair wonderfully with many different types of Mexican food (including tacos and fajitas) and it can be integrated into a more elevated cuisine. Some will even pair tequila drinks and tequila in desserts or sauces as well.

The day celebrates the responsible consumption of tequila, while promoting an appreciation of important cultural heritage aspects related to this uniquely Mexican spirit. It is a chance to connect with friends, discover a new brand or cocktail, while acknowledging the laborious components that take this famous drink from the agave fields of Jalisco to all corners of the world. So, when July 24 comes your way, raise a glass – whether it is a classic margarita or a high end añejo – to the spirit of Mexico.
