Why do people worship goddess Tulsi this month?

There are many stories behind worshipping goddess tulsi this month. According to religious scriptures, it is believed that Tulsi was born in this month.  In this month, Tulsi vivaah is also performed by women for the well-being of their husbands and family. Tulsi vivah is performed because Lord Vishnu had promised Vrinda that he will marry her in the next life. Here is the story of Vrinda ( Tulsi) and Jalandhar that you should know:

Tulsi was Vrinda in her previous life and she was the daughter of king Daitaraj Kalnemi. She became a devotee of lord Vishnu in her childhood. When Vrinda grew up, she was married to the demon Jalandhar.

Jalandhar was very powerful. According to the scriptures, in some different context, lord Shiva was annoyed with Indra and opened his third eye.  When Guru Bharaspati apologized to lord Shiva, he decided to forgive Indra and sent the fire from his eyes to the ocean. A baby boy was born out of it and he became the mighty demon king Jalandhar. He was a danger to Devas and nobody was able to defeat him due to the chastity of Vrinda.

She always used to perform whenever Jalandhar goes to war. Devas requested Lord Vishnu to help so he went for their rescue. He took the form of Jalandhar and went to Jaladhnar’s palace. Vrinda immediately touched his feet and as soon as she touched his feet, Lord Shiva killed Jalandhar and his head was thrown into his palace. Dumbfounded, Vrinda looked at her husband’s head and asked who is standing in front of her. Lord Vishnu came into his original form.

Hurt by the deception, she cursed lord Vishnu to turn into a stone, suited to the way he had behaved. That was heartless behaviour.  And lord Vishnu became Shaligram.  The creation became unbalanced. Devas requested to take back her curse. For the welfare of creation, she took back her curse. After that, Vrinda took her husband’s head in her lap and immolated herself in the fire.  From her ashes sprang a plant. Lord Vishnu named it Tulsi.  He declared one of his forms will always stay with Tulsi ( Shaligram) and no his puja will be incomplete without her.
