What it is all about Eid al-Adha

Eid al-Adha remembers the unflinching faith of Prophet Ibrahim (Abraham) who, at Allah’s command, was ready to sacrifice his son Ismail (Ishmael). Allah, pleased with Ibrahim’s devotion, gave a ram to sacrifice instead. It is an act that symbolizes obedience, sacrifice, and trust in divine will.

Rituals and Traditions

1. Eid Prayers (Salat al-Eid)

The day is rst ushered in by a special Eid prayer, usually performed in congregation at mosque or open grounds. Following this prayer is the sermon (Khutbah), which stresses faith, sacrifice, and gratitude.

2. Qurbani (Ritual Sacrifice)

Muslim believers who can afford it perform a sacrifice of an animal-usually a goat, sheep, cow, or camel – on the day of ‘Eid al-Adha in order to carry out the ritual of Qurbani. The meat is divided in three parts: one-third for the family, one-third for relatives and friends, and one-third for the needy

3. Charity and Acts of Kindness

More than the act of offering the Qurbani, Muslims are motivated to give Zakat (mandatory charity) and Sadaqah (voluntary charity) for that period. As a result, even those who cannot perform Qurbani may have a share in the blessings associated with Eid al-Adha.

4. Gathering and Feast

It is the celebration whereby family members reunite and share meals together. Regarded as auspicious by their regions, traditional dishes vary but usually consist of assorted meats and sweets, giving rise to a profound sense of unity and thankfulness.
