Bit of a Shocker: 14 Nurses Pregnant Together at Wisconsin Hospital’s Maternity Ward

A heartwarming twist at HSHS St. Vincent Hospital, where 14 nurses pregnant at the same time are making headlines and sharing their unique journey.

Full-Circle Moment: 14 Nurses Pregnant at Wisconsin’s HSHS St. Vincent Hospital Women and Infant Center Make National Headlines

A delightful surprise for many is that 14 nurses all pregnant at the same time are winning hearts in the maternity ward of a Wisconsin hospital. A very touching and unique journey is underway at HSHS St. Vincent Hospital Women and Infant Center in Green Bay, where many of the nursing staff members are preparing to welcome babies of their own.

The news broke just before Mother’s Day, giving it the extra touch of symbolism to an already heart-touching event. Out of all the spaces that have nurtured mothers and newborns, the hospital’s Women and Infant Center now stands as the site for yet another family bond—this time, among the caregivers.

“This is an incredible full-circle moment for many of our nurses,” said Amy Bardon, Director of the Women and Infant Center, in a news release. “Some of them are about to become first-time moms themselves. They were already baby experts in their own right, but their personal experience is about to bring a whole new depth to the care they provide.”

Surprise and awe struck everyone at the hospital when it was discovered that 14 nurses were expecting simultaneously. Although the Women and Infant Center found itself famous for its bonding atmosphere, this year, the nurses themselves were a tad surprised when numbers started to reveal glaringly obvious correlations.

Ashlyn Short, a registered nurse at the hospital since 2013, has been called the “expert mom” by her peers. Expecting her fifth child this coming August, Short has acted for all those that needed support and an insight. In her years at the Women and Infant Center since 2015, she has gained extensive knowledge as a nurse, but, through her own experiences, has become an indispensable resource for many first-time moms on the team.

“Definitely a little bit shocker,” Short shared a laugh. “We are all pretty close, like a big family, but none of us imagined this would happen all at once.”

Even more, the friendship shared among the expectant nurses is what made this experience even more special. Many are friends outside of work, and they’ve taken joy in supporting one another through the ups and downs of pregnancy. Whether swapping tips on morning sickness remedies or nursery themes, or just lending a listening ear, this group has fostered a unique environment both professionally and personally.

Her children, ages 2, 4, 7, and 9, have also enjoyed seeing their mom’s spotlight. While Short herself can’t say for certain how cool it is, it sure sounds like a big treat for kids to witness their mom on nationwide TV with a couple of appearances on shows like “Good Morning America.”

The view of 14 pregnant nurses at once in a birthing center speaks, in some poetic way. These women, who have committed their profession to ushering forth new life, are now experiencing the miracle from the other side. A poignant reminder of the zeal and empathy that healthcare providers inject into their profession, and how their personal lives entry into their work in such significant ways.

In true style, the hospital has taken up this occasion to celebrate all its nurses while emphasizing their capacity for strength, resilience, and unity. “We’re so glad to support them through this time,” Bardon added, reinforcing the hospital’s commitment to staff welfare.

While every nurse would one day be taking maternity leave, the hospital has ensured that services to patients will continue without a hitch. This delightful tale has since mushroomed into a nationwide conversation and has surely brought a smile to the faces of many, especially at this time when good news is sorely welcome.

Going from caring for newborns herself to becoming new mothers, these 14 nurses are just experiencing one incredible chapter in life. With their pregnancies proceeding alongside each other, they are not just on a path toward new motherhood; they are changing the definition of family in health care.

“There’s something really special about going through this journey with the same women you work beside every day,” Short says. “We understand each other, we lift each other up, and we’re going to be there for each other as moms just like we are as nurses.”
