Virat Kohli Breaks Silence On Test Retirement, Dismisses Rumours Calmly
The much-anticipated response of Virat Kohli as a cricketing legend has finally come, who has given quite a unconventional and not so serious reason behind his retirement. Appearing at a swanky fundraising gala event in London organized by YouWeCan Foundation, of which Yuvraj Singh is the founder, Kohli joked, “I have only dyed my beard a few days ago. You realize that you reached mature age when you start to colour your beard every four days.
This was a light-hearted jest with a smile which gave somewhat unorthodox insight into the mental and physical demands of playing the longest form of the game at its highest level. As the cricketing fraternity swooned over all the possible reasons: His inconsistent performances on the pitch; burn out or even the stories about interactions between teammates, Kohli seemed to have captured a very Palatable bit of truth about the taxation that cricket as a test match takes as a player, as one wears age.
The announcement in May 2025 by Kohli of his retirement to Test cricket just before the start of the five-match series of India against England was the shocking news in the cricketing world. He has spent his whole career promoting the virtue and beauties of Test cricket and his decision to retire out of the very form he conquered not only as a batsman but also as a leader has received unanimous reaction of surprise, disappointment, and sympathy.
In his first announcement of his retirement on Instagram on May 12 Kohli had written a beautiful message where he wrote that he was thankful of the experience and that although it was not an easy road, it was the right one. In an essay, he said, “Not that stepping out of this format is easy, but it is the right thing to do. I have poured my all into it and the way it has rewarded me is beyond what I would have expected.
I’m leaving with a heart full of gratitude – for the game, for the people I shared the field with, and for the many who helped me feel visible along the way. I will always look back at my Test career with a smile.”
His former coach, Ravi Shastri, had also referenced mental fatigue as a part of Kohli’s decision, stating that “the mind told the body it was time to go”. Kohli has always been one of the fittest athletes, but to withstand the mental pressure, physical strain, training and commitment to perform at a high level as a Test player, particularly as a multi-format player for over a decade, all of these factors can take a physical and emotional toll on an elite athlete’s body.

Kohli’s “beard comment” at the charity event that had to be attended by other legends of the game, namely, Kevin Pietersen, Chris Gayle and Ravi Shastri himself, added a relatable and human touch to a professional landmark moment that had come under heavy scrutiny. It highlighted the relentless pursuit of knowing your best and feeling 100%, and that the sacrifices of being an elite athlete do come with some personal cost to their lives and happiness. The cricketing world will certainly miss the great Kohli in whites, but his honesty sheds light on the emotional factors underpinning the decisions that drive even great athletes to make these important career
