Air India Crash: Vijay Rupani’s “Lucky 1206” Turned Tragic

The date 12 June had a kind of mystical, special meaning to Vijay Rupani. All his life he regarded it as his good luck charm, a series that appeared to attract good luck to him. Whether it was the car registration plate or any other important date, Rupani was constantly finding himself getting attracted to this specific set of numbers as he viewed it as a precursor of good things to come. Unfortunately, this lucky number was forever associated with the tragic Air India Express Flight 1344 accident at Kozhikode, Kerala, on August 7, 2020, which killed him and made his family lose belief in this auspicious number.

One of the 190 passengers and crew members on board the Boeing 737-800, which was flying as a Vande Bharat Mission flight, bringing back Indians stranded in other countries because of the COVID-19 pandemic, was Vijay Rupani. The Dubai-based aircraft missed the tabletop runway at the Kozhikode International Airport in heavy rain and fell into a gorge, where it scattered into two parts. The accident caused the deaths of 21 people, both pilots included, and many injuries.

To Rupani, the trip was a long-awaited homecoming. He, like many other people on that flight, was going back to his family in India after several months of anxiety and struggle in the UAE. The thought of being reunited with his loved ones after all this time, along with the conviction of his lucky number might have given him some optimism as to what this journey would bring him.

Though the information about the lucky number 1206 in the life of Rupani is quite personal, the description of this case reveals a universal human trait of finding meanings and superstitions in the incidental events. To others, these numbers offer reassurance, a feeling of being able to control a random universe or even a story of predestination. To Rupani, 1206 had been an inseparable companion, a silent vow of luck which had, hitherto, apparently, fulfilled itself on that disastrous day.

The irony of his “lucky number” being the number associated with such monumental tragedy is a cruel twist of fate. It serves as a reminder of the ultimate uncertainty of life and that deeply held subjective beliefs have limits when external forces step in. The Air India Express accident wasn’t a situational hit like a car accident but an unfortunate accident brought on by fairly complicated conditions, which involved bad weather, the condition of the runway, human dynamics, and certainly the personal belief of ja lucky charm could do nothing to mitigate in the face of all of those factors.

For the family and onlookers of Vijay Rupani, number 1206 probably ceased to be a harbinger of hope and good fortune and instead became a monument of memory, or reminder of loss. It is a direct test of the absurdity of tragedy, and that personal beliefs would simply not matter when it came to losing a life as a consequence of random circumstance J just like an arbitrary date on the calendar to remember a day on, but today a dark reminder of Vijay Rupani, and a dark shadow cast over his “lucky number”.  The tragic outcomes of the Air India Express Flight 1344 crash brings back only a dark footnote of history from 2020.
