Panicked Sarah Jessica Parker Begged Agents to Quit Sex and the City
Sarah Jessica Parker became a glowing star, thanks to her role as Carrie, making her an enduring symbol of Manolos and clever thoughts on love in New York City. When the show was picked up by HBO, she said that she was overcome with panic and begged her agents to help her get out of the deal.
You can use the “Are You a Charlotte?” game. In a podcast hosted by Kristin Davis, Parker described how lovely it was to film the pilot in 1997. Watching an entire show filled her with unease. She honestly admits, “It was scary when the show started, even after I had been accepted.” My initial thought was, ‘There is no way I can be on TV.’ I’m not sure I’m cut out for that kind of life.”
Parker was worried because she loved the life of a theater actor and didn’t want to focus her work only on film and television. Working on one project for a long time seemed unappealing to me. “It’s very hard to explain. She also noticed the monotony depressed her. Since she had experience with short-lived television series, she became used to quickly switching between different work tasks.
Terrified, Parker contacted her agents, asking them for help. Could you please help me get out of this trouble? she reportedly asked. She was so strong-willed not to commit that she told HBO they could pick someone else instead. She would meet her deal obligations by participating in several movies for the network.
Albrecht, former chairman of HBO, also played a key role in Parker’s decision process. Albrecht guaranteed Parker that if the experience was not fun after one year, she would not be obligated to it.
With hindsight, Parker recognized it was largely irrational. “The concept of a television series meant I was locked to it. I was dead wrong,” she said, realizing actors do in fact dabble in other things during their actorial hiatus time.
When Parker began the series, her apprehension evaporated. She was having fun with the cast and crew and in the transformative energy of the show. “There was not one single solitary place I would rather have been than on our set, every day,” she said.

Parker’s initial panic reveals the arbitrary quality of success, and the personal ambivalence even ‘big actors’ can have. Cultivating the will to show vulnerability provides an interesting view into Hollywood’s ‘polished’-ness, as well as the incalculable effect that “Sex and the City” would have on Parker’s career, and pop culture. A wonderful reminder of the efficacy of good counsel, and magic.
