Shirgao Jatra became a tragic scene when multiple deaths and thirty injuries occurred during the sacred celebration at Shree Lairai Devi temple in Goa. Funeral as well as national authorities rushed with swift actions after this tragic event resulted in Goan community mourning.

The festival stampede took place in the first hours as thousands of devotees observed traditional religious rituals at the location. A rapidly increasing population density within the festival crowd produced a dangerous and disordered condition that led to injuries among many festival-goers. Testimonies show people fought to keep balance in the midst of overpowering pressure while disorder and uncertainty swept through the area. The emergency teams responded immediately to the area to transport casualties to medical facilities in Goa Medical College as well as North Goa District Hospital.
