Raja Raghuvanshi’s Murder: How His Wife Sonam and Her Alleged Lover Turned a Honeymoon into Horror

The discovery of Raja Raghuvanshi a businessman from Indore dead days after he and his wife vanished transformed a honeymoon trip to Meghalaya into a full-fledged murder mystery. The Meghalaya Police claim that Raja’s wife Sonam planned the murder and allegedly colluded with her boyfriend Raj Kushwaha to carry it out. 

Sonam Raghuvanshi and four men – Raj Kushwaha Akash Rajput Vishal Singh Chauhan and Anand Kurmi – have been arrested in the case thus far. Except for Akash Rajput who was taken into custody from Lalitpur Uttar Pradesh Sonam was taken from a dhaba in Uttar Pradesh early on Monday. The other three men were taken into custody from Madhya Pradesh. 

It began when Sonam and Raja Raghuvanshi who were married on May 11 traveled to Meghalaya for their honeymoon. But on May 23 the couple vanished and local authorities launched a manhunt. Days later on June 2 Raja’s body was found in a ravine close to Weisawdong Falls in Meghalaya’s East Khasi Hills district.

The Meghalaya Police made a significant development in the case on Monday one week after the body was found by making several arrests. For investigation all of the defendants are being transported to Meghalaya.

  • The Couple with 3 Men were Spotted by the Tour Guide

A local guide in Meghalaya may have contributed to the case’s resolution by providing the police with a crucial clue. The couple Sonam and Raja Raghuvanshi went missing on May 23 from the Sohra area of Meghalaya accompanied by three male tourists Albert Pde informed police on Monday June 7. Around 10 a. m. on May 23 Pde stated that the three men were with the couple as they ascended more than 3000 steps from Nongriat to Mawlakhiat. Raja was conversing with the men in Hindi during this time. 

The woman was walking behind the four men. Since I only speak Khasi and English I was unable to understand the four mens Hindi conversation Pde said.

  • A Machete was Discovered

A bloodstained machete was discovered by the police one day after Raja Raghuvanshis body was discovered on June 2 and it served as a key clue to the murder. Two days later a raincoat that resembled the one the couple had been wearing was also found. In Mawkma village which is midway between Sohrarim and the gorge where Raghuvanshis body was discovered the raincoat was discovered. 

There was no machete used in the area, a Meghalaya police officer stated. It made us believe that there was an outsider involved. We chose to look up the couples call information.

On Monday the police also disclosed that Raja’s autopsy had shown two deep cuts on the front and back of his head. The same machete may have caused the injuries according to the police. 

  • Sonam’s Alleged Boyfriend is One of the Accused

Raj Kushwaha, one of the arrested accused is allegedly Sonam’s boyfriend and allegedly plotted the crime with her according to the police. 

An Indore police officer familiar with the investigation claims that Kushwaha was in contact with the killers for some weeks. On May 17 the three murderers who were hired for the crime departed for Meghalaya with a phone that Kushwaha had given them, the police officer said. 

According to a Meghalaya Police officer Sonams call logs also show that she communicated with Kushwaha during their honeymoon and gave him her last location before the couple vanished.

  • Raja’s Funeral was Being Driven to by Raj Kushwaha

One eyewitness claimed that Sonams purported boyfriend Raj Kushwaha drove a car to take people to Raja Raghuvanshis funeral. 

The car that Sonam’s family had arranged was driven by Raj Kushwaha according to Lakshman Singh Rathore, a man who attended Raja’s funeral. 

Sonams family whose house is in the Govind Nagar Kharcha area had provided four or five cars for people to attend the funeral when Raja’s body arrived here. I went in the four-wheeler that Kushwaha was driving but we didn’t speak. He was quoted as saying I only remembered this incident after seeing his picture in the media after his arrest.

  • There are No Return Tickets

According to Uma Raghuvanshi Raja’s mother Sonam was the one who demanded the honeymoon. The mother also claimed that Sonam allegedly carried some jewelry and stole ₹9 lakh from Raja for the honeymoon. 

Raja responded that they had not yet purchased return tickets and that they might do so in a week when Uma questioned her son about when they intended to return.
