PM Modi to target Lalu on Ambedkar from Siwan today

Today, Prime Minister Narendra Modi will make a major speech which will take place in Siwan in Bihar, due to which it is indicated that PM will make a strong attack against Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) chief Lalu Prasad Yadav using the legacy of Dr. B.R. Ambedkar. This is a politically calculated step towards the state assembly elections in Bihar, which is to be held in the coming days and should strike a chord with the Dalits voters and also showcase in what ways the BJP thinks the RJD is being hypocritical about social justice.
The statement is expected when there was a recent flare-up of Lalu Prasad Yadav who is alleged to have appeared in a video with a photograph of Dr. Ambedkar put in front of his legs at the time of his birthday partying. BJP and other allies of the NDA parties have strongly criticized this event terming the RJD chief to be disrespectful of the founder of the Indian Constitution and people of Dalit community. The Union Ministers and state BJP leaders have also been on the warpath demanding an apology by Lalu Yadav and they have pointed out that such an act has shown the real attitude of the RJD towards the Dalits, even though the RJD has been alleging to be the torchbearer of social justice.

The BJP with the marshal presence of PM Modi has been trying hard to co-opt the legacy of Ambedkar, having themselves as genuine representatives of his vision of an egalitarian society. The BJP wants to establish a bleak contrast and gather the votes of Dalits which is a huge electorate base in the state of Bihar by pointing out the perceived cases of disrespect of the RJD.

The speech where Modi is set to speak in Siwan, a district considered politically important and the one with a lot of Dalit population should reiterate that the BJP is taking social justice, equality and empowerment seriously, which the RJD is not, directly or indirectly. The RJD on the other hand has rejected the accusation as politically driven propaganda and stated that video has been purposely distorted to blacken the image of Lalu Prasad Yadav and polarize the voters.

They have also alleged that the BJP has both lied and disrespected Ambedkar. It seems that the BJP is focused on continuing the battle. PM Modi’s speech is likely to reflect on Ambedkar’s philosophy of social justice, which in turn included principles of equality, liberty, and fraternity, as well as removing inequalities based on caste, race, sex and wealth. The prime minister may also mention the welfare schemes and policies of the government that have been instrumental in working toward the Ambedkarite vision of equality and social justice, especially when empowering socially disadvantaged communities is involved.

With these references to Ambedkar in mind, Modi hopes to position the BJP as the guardian of Ambedkar’s legacy, while simultaneously putting RJD in a corner with an issue that all relates to the perceptions of significant vote bank. This political maneuvering and anticipated political battle, over an issue that is relatively insignificant in political terms, is representative of the fact that Dalit votes are strategically relevant in Bihar. With assembly elections of 2025 fast approaching, both the NDA-ruling government and opposition RJD, would be keen to cast themselves as champions of social justice and welfare for disadvantaged communities. So PM Modi’s “Ambedkar salvo” will be an important rhetorical device in expectation of hopeful public responses and mapping out a political narrative on these important issues.
