Neeraj Chopra Nips Weber in Thriller Javelin at Paris Diamond League, Neeraj secures top position

Neeraj Chopra Beats Julian Weber, Tops Paris Diamond League 2025

Paris, France-Indian javelin star Neeraj Chopra took home all in a nail-biting confrontation with his German competitor Julian Weber at Stade SeBastian Charllethy to become the winner of the 2025 Diamond League Paris edition. Chopra left the mark of 88.16m as his first throw thus recording the winning mark early in the game and it became impossible to beat this record by the rest of the competitive group.

This is a highly anticipated men javelin display that will take place on Friday, June 20, 2025, with a host of javelin athlete on the field who have broken the much-desired 90-meter mark. Nevertheless, the first performance by Chopra was the performance that literally penned the story of the night. His early brilliance, though, served to win… even three fouls and a final throw of 82.89m followed.

Julian Weber, winner of the two most recent matches between him and Chopra this season, at the Doha Diamond League where he threw an eye-boxing 91.06m, and the Janusz Kusocinski Memorial in Poland was also in the fray. Weber also threw 87.88m in the opening of the event in Paris, but this threw was to help him to clinch the second place. He always threw well but failed to top the opening statement of Chopra. Brazil would complete the top three with a credible 86.62m by Luiz Mauricio da Silva, who also broke the South American record.

To Chopra, this was a major comeback back to the top of the podium in the Diamond League. He last won a Diamond League race, at Lausanne, in June 2023. Since then, he had repeatedly finished in second place at six Diamond League meetings, including the earlier Doha leg of the 2025 season, where he threw a personal best and national record of 90.23m, but was again beaten by Weber’s last throw. The Paris win ends this string of second-place finishes, but also presents a vital psychological advantage as the season approaches the summer months.

Giving an interview after his victory, the 27-year-old Olympic medalist expressed he felt good about his performance but also stated he needed to regain better control of his run up to get to consistently throwing 90m. The win in Paris, the eighth stop of the 2025 Diamond League season, puts Chopra in a good position as athletes now look to get all the points they can to qualify for the two-day final in Zurich in August.

The rivalry and depth of competition between Chopra and Weber is currently one of the best stories in international javelin and has certainly elevated both of their performances. As the 2025 Diamond League season continues, with upcoming meets in Ostrava and the rescheduled Neeraj Chopra Classic in Bengaluru, fans will be keeping their fingers crossed for more face-offs and some potentially more historic throws from these two athletes.
