Fatal Mishap on Local Train in Thane Raises Serious Safety Concerns
The Mumbra-Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) fast local train in Thane Maharashtra had a tragic and shocking incident in which four passengers died and several others were injured after falling on the railway track according to the Thane Municipal Commissioner.
Passengers Fall from Moving Train
About ten to fifteen passengers are said to have fallen from the moving train at Mumbra railway station onto the railway track according to preliminary reports.
Emergency Response and Initial Investigations
Following the tragic event police and railroad officials hurried to the scene. To receive treatment the injured passengers have been transported to a nearby medical facility.
Overcrowding Blamed for the Accident
Some passengers at Thames Mumbra railway station fell from the train on their way to CSMT. The overcrowding on the train is thought to have caused the accident. Police and railway management have arrived at the location. The injured are being transported to the closest hospital right away. The accident is currently being investigated. The incident has also had an impact on local services the Central Railway said in a statement.
Overcrowding at the Heart of the Tragedy
Since many passengers were hanging close to the train doors during the journey it is believed that overcrowding was the cause of the incident.
Local Train Services Disrupted
Local train services on the central line have since been impacted.
In expressing his condolences for the deaths in the tragic incident the chief minister of Maharashtra stated: It is very unfortunate that a total of 8 passengers fell from a local train between Diva-Mumbra station and some of them lost their lives. I honor them with my sincere gratitude. We are grieving with their families. The injured are receiving treatment at Thane General Hospital and Shivaji Hospital after being admitted right away. The local government is organizing. I ask God to grant the injured people speedy recovery. The precise cause of this incident is being investigated by the Railway Department.

Infrastructure Concerns Raised by Leaders
“The incident in Mumbra Kalwa is unfortunate” said BJP leader Kirit Somaiya. “We have not been able to expand the transportation system at the same rate as the population in the Thane to Dombivli area has grown. For this reason metro work has received more attention from the Devendra Fadnavis administration. In addition to a direct rail connection to Diwali that avoids Thane efforts are being made to increase the capacity of alternate roads by increasing the number of coaches to 15 each. It will require two to five years. During this period passengers are only asked to adhere to this rule.

Safety Warnings Ignored, Say Commuter Associations
The Mumbai Rail Pravasi Sangh meanwhile expressed worry about the state of the railroad tracks. The association stated in a press release that it has continuously expressed concerns regarding the dangerous section between Diva and Kalwa which is commonly known as a death track.
There is still no long-term solution in place even after numerous warnings and representations to the Railway Board General Manager and Divisional Railway Manager (DRM).
