18 Killed, Many Injured As Bus Carrying Kanwariyas Crashes In Jharkhand
In a heartbreaking turn of events that has produced a dark cloud over the otherwise festive Kanwar Yatra, no less than 18 pilgrims were killed and others injured when a bus full of Kanwariyas crashed head-on with a truck in the Deoghar district of Jharkhand. The accident which was fatal happened in the early hours of Tuesday, July 29, 2025, in the outskirts of Jamuniya forest- which is within the limits of Mohanpur Police Station.
An Alarming Morning Smash-Up-
The crash occurred at about 4.30 AM, when a bus carrying a large number of devotees headed to the holy Baba Baidyanath Dham temple in Deoghar which is also a great pilgrimage destination during the holy month of Shravan. A gruesome picture could be found as eyewitnesses also reported a shouting in ruins because the sound was so unthinkingly loud that the bus was said to have been ripped apart. The truck that had been involved in the crash was reported to carry gas cylinders, but both the magnitude of damage or even the second hazard that could cause due to cargo in it could not be identified at the time of accident.
Kanwar Yatra is the one where lakhs of devotees, called Kanwariyas, embark on long and treacherous (sometimes on feet) journey to get some sacred water of the Ganges River and present it to Lord Shiva at the different temples. This is a very heartbreaking accident to the spiritual world because this is what pilgrims usually do with great faith and devotion.
Inconsistency in casualties and rescue operation-
Although the early reports had differed in what exactly was the number of people dead, some officials saying that there were five or six deaths, but BJP MP Nishikant Dubey has come to clarify that 18 devotees have died in the unfortunate incident. The difference in numbers can be quite typical during the initial phase of such massive accidents when the rescue effort is still in process and so are critical patients transferred to several medical establishments.

Emergency teams, including police, ambulance services and possibly the NDRF rushed to the location after receiving information about the accident.
Rescue workers worked to extricate the injured and recover the dead from the wreckage of the bus. The injured were moved urgently to Deoghar Sadar Hospital and nearby health centres, with reports indicating many remained serious, which may increase the tally of fatalities.
Call for Strength and Support-
Deoghar MP Nishikant Dubey expressed deep sorrow over the accident, on X, ” In my Lok Sabha constituency of Deoghar, during Kanwar Yatra of Shravan month, 18 devotees lost their lives in a bus and truck accident. May Baba Baidyanath Ji give strength to the families to bear this grief.” The incident has shaken the region into calls for stringent road safety measures during major pilgrim seasons when the roads become busy. For now, the focus remains on caring for the injured and supporting the grieving families.
