Today the music community mourns after learning of the sudden death of Jill Sobule. The musician Jill Sobule passed away due to a destructive house fire that happened in Woodbury, Minnesota on Thursday morning when she was just 66 years old. She became recognized through her influential songs “I Kissed a Girl” from 1995 along with “Supermodel” which appeared in the “Clueless” soundtrack. She was 66 years old.
John Porter her manager paid tribute to Sobule by acknowledging her status as “a force of nature and human rights advocate whose music is woven into our culture.” Her passing suddenly eliminated a critical presence in both alternative and socially oriented musical genres and startled many music fans and peers worldwide.
The musician Jill Sobule made her musical debut in Denver Colorado before establishing a unique career through her humorous songwriting style and folk musical influences while deflecting social problems. After releasing the 1995 album bearing her name which contained “I Kissed a Girl” she gained wide mainstream recognition. Before her 2008 “I Kissed a Girl” hit the music scene Katy Perry, Sobule introduced mainstream society to the LGBTQ+ movement through her track which candidly explored same-sex attraction.
The sincere nature and wry writing style in Sobule’s songs allowed her to grow a group of devoted music fans in addition to her blockbuster hits. The music tracks “Supermodel” and “Karen by Night” and “Lucy at the Gym” demonstrated Sobule’s talent for crafting memorable songs that exposed the fashion industry and presented relatable characters. It is especially sad news, as it comes just prior to the 30th-anniversary reissue of her self-titled album, which was expected to be out on June 6th – a reissue that fans were looking forward to as a celebration of her long-lasting impact on music. Sobule was also in the middle of a tour, and about to perform in her hometown of Denver on Friday night. Instead, there will be an informal gathering for friends and fans to tell stories and sing in her honor.
The manner of her death in a house fire is a tragic and abrupt ending for an artist out of whom we were hoping to hear so much more. Authorities in Woodbury, MN are investigating the cause.
