Jammu & Kashmir Weather Fury: 10 Lives Lost in Landslides and Cloudburst

Torrential Rains Trigger Widespread Destruction Across Jammu & Kashmir

Heavy Rain Batters J&K: 7 Dead in Reasi Landslides, 3 in Ramban Cloudburst

Jammu and Kashmir is reeling under severe weather conditions as relentless rains over the past few days have triggered landslides, flash floods, and cloudbursts, leaving a trail of devastation. On Friday, at least seven people were killed in separate incidents of landslides in Reasi district, while three others lost their lives in a cloudburst in Ramban district. Authorities have launched extensive rescue and relief operations as several roads remain blocked, and multiple villages are cut off due to damaged infrastructure.

According to officials, heavy rainfall began lashing parts of the Union Territory late Thursday night, causing water levels in rivers and streams to swell dangerously. In Reasi, massive landslides were reported in several remote areas, sweeping away homes and trapping families under debris. The district administration has confirmed the recovery of seven bodies so far, with rescue teams continuing efforts to search for survivors. Several people are feared missing, prompting authorities to deploy additional forces, including the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF).

In Ramban, a sudden cloudburst struck the Sangaldan area in the early hours of Friday, sweeping away makeshift shelters and damaging roads. Three fatalities have been confirmed, and rescue teams are working round-the-clock to clear debris and restore connectivity. Officials have warned residents to stay indoors and avoid traveling on mountainous roads, as heavy rainfall continues to pose a threat of more landslides and flash floods.

Major highways, including the crucial Jammu-Srinagar National Highway, have been partially closed due to multiple landslides, hampering relief operations. Helicopter services have been kept on standby to evacuate stranded families in remote and inaccessible regions. The meteorological department has issued a red alert for several districts, predicting more heavy rainfall in the next 24 to 48 hours.

Local authorities have also set up emergency shelters for displaced residents, while teams from the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), police, and Army have been mobilized to assist with relief work. “The situation remains tense as weather conditions are worsening. We are focusing on saving lives and ensuring supplies reach cut-off villages,” a senior official from the Reasi administration stated.

The ongoing rainfall has also caused waterlogging in low-lying areas, damaged crops, and disrupted power supply in multiple districts. Experts have linked the increasing frequency of cloudbursts and landslides in the region to changing climatic patterns and deforestation, urging immediate measures for disaster preparedness and environmental conservation.
