India Slams Pakistan At UNSC Over Terror, Kashmir, Water Disputes

At the United Nations Security Council (UNSC), New Delhi made a blistering criticism of Pakistan terming it as a terror haven and a serial borrower at the International Monetary Fund (IMF). The acerbic response on the part of Pakistan, which now assumed UNSC presidency, was given after it voiced the problematic questions of Jammu and Kashmir and the Indus Waters Treaty (IWT) in one of the official high-level debates spearheaded with the intent of advancing international peace and security.

The statement of the Indian Permanent Representative to the UN, Ambassador Parvathaneni Harish, was a scorcher one, having painted a sharp contrast between Indian state of democracy taking an economically upward surge and the fanaticism and terrorism that thrive in Pakistan. Harish did not mince words in declining the efforts of Pakistan trying to internationalize the Kashmir problem with India repeating old tune that Jammu and Kashmir is part of India and there can be no compromise in that regard. He denounced Pakistan of the “devious plan” to use accounts in the international institutions to spread its false ideas and divert the attention it has to its domestic problems and cross-border terrorism and which encourages.

The Indian envoy did not need any request to remind the recent terror attack in Pahalgam in April of this year, which has caused the death of 26 innocent tourists. India blamed this barbaric act to Pakistan based terror outfit Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) who had put across a guise of The Resistance Front. After the attack, and according to a statement by the UNSC, India declared an operation Sindoor, a well-targeted, proportionate and non-escalatory military action against the terrorist camps in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Jammu and Kashmir (PoJK) as per Harish. He also added that India had stopped its military actions upon the direct request of Pakistan having accomplished its main goals, which stated clearly opposing some international positions on mediation.
About the Indus Waters Treaty, the Deputy Prime Minister of Pakistan and the Foreign Minister, Mohammad Ishaq Dar, had on his part accused India of unilaterally keeping the 65 year old treaty in abeyance on groundless reasons with the motive that it was withholding the flow of water to 240 million people in Pakistan.

However, India maintained that it would keep the IWT in abeyance until Pakistan could credibly and irrevocably disavow its support for cross-border terror. Harish highlighted that the IWT is a bilateral pact that has met serious challenges previously, and its disputes should be settled bilaterally, rather than via “megaphone diplomacy” at the UN.

India’s strong position once again at the UNSC emphasised its zero-tolerance approach to terrorism and its determination to protect its sovereignty and territorial health. The exchange offered a glimpse of the ever-perturbed conditions between the two nuclear neighbours of South Asia, and rested on India finding a way to counter Pakistan’s position at foreign forums, especially with regard to matters it identifies as internal or bilateral.
