Honoring Heroes: Memorial Day Tribute to Those Who Served Bravely

On the last Monday in May, every year, Memorial Day is solemnly observed in the U.S., honoring and remembering those who died in the U.S. military. Memorial Day in 2025 will be held on Monday, May 26.

It was the Civil War, with its many casualties, that gave rise to Memorial Day. Both North and South allowed communities to honor their war dead in the spring by decorating their graves with flowers. These sudden gatherings would soon be grouped as “Decoration Day.” On that date in 1868, General Logan and the Union’s Grand Army of the Republic declared Decoration Day and asked all Americans to honor fallen soldiers by adorning their graves on May 30. In that year, the national Veterans Day was first celebrated at Arlington National Cemetery.

Following World War I, the holiday was changed to include the deaths of all Americans serving in the military, from all wars. In 1971, Memorial Day was officially given as a federal holiday and the day was moved to the last Monday in May to make a three-day weekend.

Even though many connect Memorial Day to the start of summer and explore barbecues or go on a trip, it is, above all, a time for gratitude and appreciation. Traditions seen everywhere typically involve:
A lot of people visit the graves of those who served in the military, adding flowers and flags.

• Participating in parades and ceremonies: Across the country towns and cities hold parades and remembrances of our fallen citizens.
• National Moment of Remembrance: At 3:00 p.m. local time, a moment of silence is encouraged to pay our respects and remember the sacrifices of those who made the ultimate sacrifice.
• Flying the flag at half staff: At sunrise on Memorial Day the U.S. flag is flown at half staff until noon, at which point it is raised to full staff until sunset. This signifies that the Nation remembers our Fallen, we still remember, but we also move on as a country with a renewed spirit and purpose.
• Wearing a red poppy: Inspired by the famous poem written after World War I, “In Flanders Fields,” which explains the significance of the poppy, the red poppy became a lasting symbol of remembrance of those who died in battle.
