Tragedy in Uttara as Bangladesh Air Force Jet Slams Into School
In Dhaka a Bangladesh Air Force jet struck a school building Monday killing at least one person and wounding 100 more. In the Uttara neighborhood of Dhaka the Milestone School and College building was struck by the Chinese-made F-7 jet.
Classes had just started when the crash occurred. As rescuers hurried to transport the injured to the hospital television footage showed fire and black smoke plumes rising from the crash site.
In the midst of the chaos students were seen running wildly, some of them with burn injuries and bleeding heavily.
According to witnesses, Army personnel saved the injured students in their arms and transported them to hospitals in rickshaw vans and other vehicles because ambulances were not immediately available.
Although the crash was confirmed by the Bangladeshi air force neither the cause nor whether the pilot had ejected were mentioned.
The first rescue efforts were conducted by college staff and instructors and later the army and fire department officials joined in. According to a teacher, multiple students were trapped when the plane struck the front side of a three-story school building.
More than thirty patients were admitted to the National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery according to the Daily Star. Other people were brought to hospitals in the area.
