SC landmark verdict to Iran’s anti-hijab row: Top September Events 2022

4 major September events in 2022 that were highlights of the week.

From the Supreme Court landmark judgement to Iran’s anti-hijab protests Here are 4 major September events in 2022 were highlights of the week.

SC judgement on abortion

Supreme court of India rules that women are entitled to safe and legal abortions, and distinctions between married and unmarried women are unconstitutional. The ground-breaking judgment by Justice JB Pardiwala, Justice DY Chandrachud and Justice AS Bopanna also recognized marital rape, though strictly within the scope of abortion.

Under the Medical Termination of Pregnancy Act, rape must include marital rape in its definition. This observation may pave the way for later judgements on marital rape, a subject of intense debate in the country. The court ruled that a woman’s marital status cannot be used to deny her the right to an abortion while also judging that unmarried women have the same right to be entitled to terminate an unwanted pregnancy within 24 weeks.

A court ruled that denying single or unmarried women the right to abort an unwanted pregnancy violates their fundamental rights. It said there was a distinction between married and unmarried women under the abortion laws that was “artificial and constitutionally unsustainable” and perpetuated the stereotype that only married women are sexually active.

Anti-Hijab protests in Iran

The anti-hijab row is still on in Iran. Women in Iran are burning their hijabs and cutting their hair. They are protesting the death of 22-year-old Mahsa Amini. She was allegedly arrested in Iran’s Tehran for not wearing her hijab correctly. Mahsa was visiting Tehran with her family when she was detained. According to reports, she suffered a heart attack and went into a coma. Following her death, widespread protests flared up globally.

To oppose the repression being carried out by the country’s ‘morality police. Iranian women have come up with new ways to protest. The protests have also turned violent. Mobile internet was also disrupted in Iran. Under Iran’s Sharia (Islamic) law, women are obliged to cover their hair. It also bans tight trousers, ripped jeans, clothes that expose the knees and brightly coloured outfits. Violators face public rebuke, fines or arrest.

Ankita Bhandari murder case controversy

Ankita Bhandari’s body was recovered from a canal in Uttarakhand’s Rishikesh hours after locals set fire to her resort. Pulkit Arya, son of former Uttarakhand BJP Minister Vinod Arya and the main accused in the teenager’s murder case, owned the resort. This comes after the demolition of the Vanatara resort in Rishikesh was carried out on the state government’s orders. After the murder of the teen, protests fuelled.

Ankita’s mortal remains were recovered from the Chilla canal in Rishikesh. The deceased’s brother and father identified the body, and police arrested Pulkit and two brothers for murdering Bhandari, who worked as a receptionist at Vanantra resort in the Laxman Jhula area.

Project Cheetah successful in India

Eight African cheetahs were brought to India from Namibia as a part of Project Cheetah, the world’s 1st inter-continental large wild carnivore translocation project.

Kuno’s geography consists of open forest patches, vast grasslands, and hills, perfect for the big cats. Like tigers have helped the forest ecosystem, we hope the cheetah will help revive the open grassland ecosystem, which is threatened by extinction and improve protection for various species that are the cheetah’s natural prey. Another 413 sq. km was added to the national park for this project.
