What is the problem with Arranged Marriage?

The trend of ‘Arranged Marriage’ is very common in India, more than 90% of Indians still follow this trend and it is also true that less than 5% of these marriages end up in divorce. Personally, I do not support arranged marriage, and here is why it puts a lot of questions forward-

· The running joke has always been that ‘Indian parents always advice us to not talk to strangers, but, they marry us to one and expect us to live with for the rest of our lives.’ This is a very serious question because living with someone you have known for such a short time is a huge deal.

· When put in such a situation, both sides (male and female) put forward their best side, in such cases it becomes difficult to know the true color of a person.

Arranged Marriage

· Many people say yes to arrange marriage only because of family or societal pressure.

· The question of having the freedom to choose one’s life partner becomes a huge question such a situation.

· People often fail to realize the reason why the divorce rates are less in arranged marriages. Many a times, couples continue to live with each other even though they are not happy just for the sake of their family or children.

That being said, many people have had successful arranged marriages and I in no way want to question the sanctity of a long drawn tradition, but, there are certain flaws that this tradition has which should be looked into with changing times.
