Seema Punia; India’s Discus thrower qualifies for Rio Olympics

Haryana based athlete Seema Punia made her way to the Rio Olympics with a 62.62 m effort at the Pat Young’s Throwers Classic 2016.

The event took place on Sunday at Salinas (California) in the United States of America.

Seema Punia, the 32 -year old discus thrower crossed the Rio Games qualification with her best effort of the season of a 62.62 m.

She won a gold medal at the event against the 2008 Olympic discus thrower champion Stephanie Brown Trafton of United States.

This was her third Olympic Games appearance after having taken part in 2004 and 2012 where she failed to qualify the qualification round both times.

Seema Punia is the 19th Indian track and ground athletes to be qualified for Rio Olympics. Seema is taking training at the United States from the funds being provided by the Sports Ministry under the Target Olympic Podium Scheme.

Earlier she had won gold at the 2014 Asian Games in Guangzhou, China with a throw of 61.3m and silver in 2014 Glasgow Commonwealth Games with an effort of 61.61m
