A historic move was welcomed in the oil-rich eastern nation of Saudi Arabia when women were allowed to vote and register themselves to stand in local elections.
The step came in 2011 after late Kind Abdullah granted women in the gulf state the right to vote and stand as candidates in local elections.
A nation where women have to take permissions from a male parent/guardian to travel, marry, work and where getting covered in veils from head to toe is mandatory for them in public, this step was a much needed one and opened new horizons for them.
Although a noble step, this move is only the tip of the iceberg; a lot needs and should be done.
