The co-operative societies in the North East India, have traits which are inherent in their indigenous beliefs. These societies have always played an important role in preserving the cultural and social identity, while enhancing the financial profiles of their constituencies.

This region of India has a abundance in human and natural resources. This is both a challenge and opportunity faced by these Cooperative Societies. This region also shares a porus border with other Asian countries. This has also proven to be a major hinderance in the smooth functioning of these societies.

The Meghalaya Chief Minister inaugurated the Cooperative Summit for the Development of Co-operatives in North Eastern Region today at the State Convention Centre, Shillong. It was attended by the Union Minister of State for Home Affairs, Shri Kiren Rijiju as Guest of Honour.

The Chief Minister re-iterated that a strong momentum needs to be created to harvest this abundance of natural resources, including the latent manpower.

The Chief Minister hopes Meghalaya Livelihood and Access to Market Projects (Lamp) initiated with IFAD, Rome will be able to strengthen the gaps in youth migration witnessing in farming communities.

It is by recreating these cluster co-operatives societies, the rural communities will be able to sustain themselves by linking to improve market infrastructure, also by reopening more border trade. He stressed then only the co-operative movement can be an effective instrument to build up successful entrepreneurship model for the people.
