Cyclone Biparjoy Updates: Indian Navy On Standby 

Cyclone Biparjoy is all set to make landfall today in Gujarat and the government is getting ready to deal with the situation. The Navy, NDRF, and SDRF are ready to deal with this and have teams on standby.

Cyclone Biparjoy is all set to make landfall today in Gujarat and the government is getting ready to deal with the situation. Indian Navy ships with Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief (HADR) bricks are on standby to deal with any situation. NDRF (National Disaster Response Force) and (State Disaster Response Force), teams have also been stationed in Porbandar, Okha, and Valsura and other coastal districts. 

As both India and Pakistan brace for the cyclone, strong winds have been observed in Kutch. The sea has become turbulent in Kutch and the cyclone will make landfall by evening. A red and orange alert has also been issued in several districts of teh state. 

As per IMD’s latest update, “VSCS Biparjoy over Northeast Arabian Sea at 0230 hours IST of 15th June, 2023 about 200 km west-southwest of Jakhau Port (Gujarat). To cross Saurashtra and Kutch and adjoining Pakistan coasts between Mandvi and Karachi near Jakhau Port by evening of 15th June as a VSVS.”

As per the alert by IMD (Indian Meteorological Department), the cyclone will be extremely powerful and has the potential to uproot thatched houses on the coast. It has been given the ‘very severe cyclonic storm’ of category 3 status and hence, more than 74000 people have been evacuated from areas of Kutch, Jamnagar, Morbi, Rajkot, Junagadh, Porbandar, and more and moved to temporary shelters. 

The two temples Dwarkadhish Temple in Devbhumi Dwarka and Somnath Temple in Gir Somnath district have also been closed for devotees.

Cyclone Biparjoy 

Cyclone Biparjoy is a deep depression over the southeast Arabian Sea. The cyclone ‘Biparjoy’ means disaster in the Bengali. This is the third cyclone to hit the west coast in 60 years. 

It is forecasted to impact the 325-kilometer coastal stretch from Mandvi in Gujarat to Karachi in Pakistan. Wind speeds are predicted to reach 125-135 km/h and can also reach much higher speeds of 140-150 km/h when it makes landfall.

The cyclone will first make landfall near Kutch and then move to Pakistan. 

Earlier this week, PM Modi also chaired a meeting to review preparations for the cyclone. He directed the government to take all necessary actions to move people to safety and maintain essential services such as power, health, and drinking water. Home Minister Amit Shah also attended the meeting.
