‘Aafat’ from the movie ‘Liger,’ starring Ananya Pandey and Vijay Devarakonda, is going viral on social media for all the wrong reasons. People have been calling out the song’s lyrics for casually using the line, “Bhagwaan ke Liye Mujhe chord do,” and purportedly normalizing rape culture. But it is not the first time Bollywood came up with such an offensive song.

For the unversed, the line( Bhagwan ke liye chod do) is often associated with the 80s or 90s Bollywood scenes where a woman in distress would dramatically plead a ‘bad guy’ to leave her alone, only to be rescued by the mighty protagonist in most cases. The song has found its way into the new song in a way that it almost caricatures the idea of power imbalance, abuse, and violence.

Reddit Reacts

A Reddit user slammed the song and wrote,

The line: Bhagwan Ke Liye chor Do so out of place.

Overall, I am pretty liberal but making light of violence against women is not correct. Especially not even dark organic humour. It’s just out of place.

Another user wrote, “Who in their right mind thought it would be cool to put dialogue from a rape scene into a modern song? Pathetic.”

Another wrote, “Shame on both of the actors… IDK how can Ananya even agree to do this song even after being a woman herself.”

The song is also being criticized for being highly misogynistic. The controversy has also opened up a conversation around filmmaker Puri Jagannath’s regressive storytelling across his films.

In most of the Reddit conversation over the movie Liger and song itself, Puri Jagannath was accused on several occasions of being notorious for glorifying stalking, and showing women as bimbos (almost always played by imported Mumbai/Delhi model types) and generally demeaning them.

Even the reviews now described Liger as absurd and unbearable. They kept it among the list of worst movies ever made. Actor Deverakonda, while raising concerns about the social media hatred for his film, said that Charmme Kaur, Karan Johar, Puri Jagannadh, and others in the film’s team had worked hard for 3 years to complete the movie amid the pandemic.

However, it is sad to watch that the Liger team worked finger to the bone only to come out with such a ‘Pan India’ disaster.

 Embarrassing music and choreography

Usually, dharma and Sony collaboration assure some musical bangers as Gehraiyaan did at the start of the year. However, liger music is not only forgettable, but such bizarre dance steps also assist that it makes matters for this film and its quality ten times worse.

Piyush Bhagat and Shazia Samji deliver with peppy choreography, but after then, its picturization is lacklustre at best. Even inventive decisions to place hands through crevices to compensate for the lack of chemistry between the leads are insufficient. The song Aafat is romantic, but in addition, a dialogue of a woman crying in its chorus, screaming for help as she gets assaulted, changes the context entirely.

However, this is not the only time Bollywood has come up with such problematic songs.

Bollywood songs that are offensive

Supergirl From China

This entire song was made just to objectify the video’s star, i.e., Sunny Leone. In the song, you can see a geek hanging out with his friends, where his friends brought him a girl from China. The geek is immediately disappointed and states, “Waha to sab Kuch duplicate aur Chota Chota Hota Hai.”

Not only this, the sexually frustrated Indian audience assures that this illogical song gets over 100 million views.

Ek Chumma From Housefull 3

If the film was bad, the songs were worst. The film was called out to glorify a rape scene and use the victim’s pain as humour. Beholding to the movie’s legacy, the song Ek Chumma completely shunned the concept of concern. The song was based on the premise that ‘Humne Tumhari Jann Bhachayi Hai, now we deserve a kiss”.

Gandi Baat from R… Rajkumar

This movie looks like a crash course for Shahid Kapoor before becoming toxic Kabir Singh. ‘Raja beta ban ke Maine jab sharafat dikhayi, tune bola hatt mawali bhav nhi Diya re’ This guy is giving himself a license to harass a girl because he had been nice to her. Still, her continuous rejection forced him to be a bad guy.

Bhai no means no, kab samjhoge yeh

Coca Cola Tu

Probably the only song where Tony Kakkar hadn’t overused and overstretched a word. But what a waste!

May you have enjoyed the movie Lukka Chuppi but we wish they hadn’t put this song which is neither related to the film’s plot nor make any sense. Just to encash the song’s popularity, the filmmakers decide to put a song that objectifies a woman by calling her Coca-Cola tuuuuhhhh.

Thande ki botal main tera opener Tujhe ghat ghat mein pee lon. Does it make any sense?

What are your thoughts on these songs and their lyrics?
