Tirath Rawat Called out a woman for wearing ripped jeans. Here are other statements by politicians that are as offensive as ‘Ripped Jeans’ Comment
Recently, the newly elected CM of Uttrakhand, Tirath Singh Rawat has landed has gotten himself in a controversy on criticizing women wearing ripped jeans, said he was shocked to see women in ripped jeans, “what example they set up before their children and the society”. He made this remark while speaking at a workshop organized by the Uttarakhand State Commission for Protection of Child Rights in Dehradun. And while this came to us as a shocker, we realized that he wasn’t the only one to say so. There are several other politicians who have made such offensive comments on women. So, here are the other statements by politicians that are as offensive as ripped jeans comment.

1. “Women talk about all things they want to do in life, but the most important thing for them is to look after their family and children” – Ganesh Joshi

While Rawat made his comment on the Ripped Jeans, MLA from Uttrakhand, Ganesh Joshi said aloud that a women’s first and foremost responsibility is to take care of the children and family. That women often talk about the things they want to do but are certainly should not be allowed to because they are to look at the children and family.
2. Just because India achieved freedom at midnight does not mean that women can venture out after dark – Botsa Satyanarayana
Remember the Delhi Gang Rape Case? Yes, one of the most heartwrenching rape cases in India took place in 2008. Botsa Satyanarayana, a Congress party politician made this statement following the rape case. His utter idea is suggesting that women should not be allowed to step out after it’s dark as they are not that free. And since it was a comment in the backdrop of the Delhi Rape case, the comment is perhaps victim blaming too.
3. Only rich and attractive women get ahead in life – Mulayam Singh
Well, this is not the only statement by Mulayam Singh which can be called out as offensive. In the year 2012, while objecting to the Women’s Reservation Bill, pointing out why rural women have no benefits in hand with the bill, Mulayam said that the women from the villages won’t be benefitted from it because ‘voh akarshak nhi hoti’ (they are not attractive).
4. “If a woman is caught in rape cases, then both, she and the boy should be punished” – Abu Azmi
Abu Azmi, the MLA of Maharashtra told a city tabloid that if a woman is caught in rape cases, then both, she and the boy should be punished. He even added In India, there is a death penalty for rape but what about women doing consensual sex outside marriage. There is no penalty against women.
5. Sexual Assault could have been prevented if women would have married if they were young – Om Prakash Chautala
Former Harayana CM from Indian National Lok Dal (INLD), Om Prakash Chautala advocating for the lowering of marriage in India said that if girls would have made to marry at a young age, they could have been prevented from sexual assault. This idea and statement came in support of Khaap Panchayat’s proposal of decreasing the marriageable age.
So these were a few statements that we happened to have managed to recognize. And there are so many such statements by politicians who have been in a position of power and authority. If this continues, we wonder what kind of misogyny level we will hit?
