Assamese singer Zubeen Garg, known for his soulful voice and chart-topping hits like Ya Ali, passed away unexpectedly during a sea outing in Singapore. The 52-year-old singer, who was scheduled to perform at the North East Festival on Saturday, reportedly suffered a seizure while scuba diving and swimming. Sources confirmed that he was rushed to a nearby hospital, where he was placed under intensive care but could not be revived, leaving fans and the music fraternity in shock.
Organisers of the North East Festival shared the tragic news, stating, “It is with deep sadness that we share the news of Zubeen Garg’s passing. While scuba diving, he experienced breathing difficulties and was immediately given CPR before being rushed to Singapore General Hospital. Despite efforts to save him, he was declared dead in the ICU around 2.30 PM IST.” His sudden demise has left a void in India’s music scene, especially in Assam, where he was regarded as a cultural icon.
Tributes poured in from across the Northeast and beyond, as fans mourned the loss of one of Assam’s most beloved singers. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma expressed his grief on social media, saying, “Today Assam lost one of its favourite sons. I am in a loss of words to describe what Zubeen meant for Assam. He has gone too early, this was not an age to go. Zubeen’s voice had an unmatched ability to energise people and his music spoke directly to our minds and souls. He has left a void that will never be filled.”

Former Rajya Sabha MP Ripu Bora also paid his respects, writing, “Deeply shocked and saddened by the untimely demise of our cultural icon, Zubeen Garg. His voice, music, and indomitable spirit inspired generations across Assam and beyond. My heartfelt condolences to his family, fans, and loved ones. Rest in peace, Legend.” Actor Adil Hussain remembered him fondly, saying, “Devastated and shocked by the news of Zubeen Garg’s sudden death in an accident in Singapore. His contribution to Assamese music and culture is extraordinary. He will live amongst us through his songs.”
Chief Minister Sarma confirmed that he had spoken with Indian High Commissioner to Singapore Shilpak Ambule to coordinate the return of Zubeen Garg’s body. He mentioned that the Indian High Commission is in touch with Singaporean authorities, who will decide if an autopsy is necessary. “If an autopsy needs to be done, Zubeen’s mortal remains are likely to reach Assam by Saturday evening,” he said.
Zubeen Garg, often referred to as the voice of Assam, rose to national fame with the hit song Ya Ali from the Bollywood film Gangster. His music career spanned several decades, with memorable Bollywood tracks such as Dil Tu Hi Bataa from Krrish 3 and Jaane Kya Chahe Man from Pyaar Ke Side Effects. He also sang in multiple regional languages, including Assamese, Bangla, and Nepali, which helped him build a devoted fanbase across India and abroad.

His life was also marked by personal tragedy. Twenty-three years ago, his sister Jonkey passed away in a road accident at the age of 20, a loss that profoundly influenced Zubeen’s music and artistic journey. Despite the sorrow he endured, he continued to mesmerize audiences with his emotional depth and versatile singing abilities.
Zubeen Garg’s untimely death has left a deep void in the music world. His songs, which blended raw emotion with melody, will continue to resonate with fans across generations.
