Scorsese’s “Flower Moon” Opens at $9.4M, Still Unable to Beat Taylor Swift’s “Eras Tour”

Taylor Swift's "Eras Tour" outshines Scorsese's "Killers of the Flower Moon," setting the stage for a competitive weekend at the box office.

Taylor Swift’s concert dominates Box Office

On its second Friday, Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour, in collaboration with AMC Theatres, brought in an impressive $10.4 million, outperforming the $9.4 million earned by Martin Scorsese’s Killers of the Flower Moon on its opening day at the domestic box office. It’s pretty clear that Eras Tour is set to dominate the box office over the weekend as well, with a projected earning of $30 million to $33 million. It has already crossed the $100 million mark in domestic earnings.

AMC is taking a more conservative approach,a $26 million to $27 million weekend for Eras Tour, just in case walk-up business remains limited.

Killers of the Flower Moon is a must watch!

Starring Leonardo DiCaprio, Lily Gladstone, and Robert De Niro, Killers of the Flower Moon is expected to achieve a solid $23 million for the weekend, making it the third-best nationwide opening in Scorsese’s career, following Shutter Island in 2010 ($41 million) and The Departed in 2006 ($26.9 million), without adjusting for inflation. Notably, the film has received the best CinemaScores of Scorsese’s career, earning an A-.

Flower Moon Targets Awards Season

This is a significant accomplishment for an adult drama that runs for three hours and 26 minutes. Although Flower Moon’s audience skews older, with 46 percent of Friday’s ticket buyers being under the age of 35 (including 27 percent between 25 and 34), Apple and Paramount are counting on it to perform well in the coming weeks as awards season approaches, thanks to strong reviews and positive audience feedback.

On Friday, the movie had a notably male audience (61 percent), but this gender breakdown could even out over the weekend.

Killers of the Flower Moon, based on David Grann’s book about the murders of Osage Nation tribe members in the 1920s, after oil was discovered on their Oklahoma land, has faced some unique challenges, including the SAG-AFTRA strike, which limited the cast’s ability to engage in publicity. Despite these obstacles, the film has shown promise.

Apple’s Cinematic Milestone

This weekend is a pivotal moment for Apple’s film aspirations. Costing $200 million, Killers of the Flower Moon is arguably the most significant release from a tech giant to receive a traditional theatrical run, rather than going straight to streaming. Apple Original Films has expressed its commitment to spending $1 billion annually on producing movies for both streaming and theaters, and Killers of the Flower Moon is a significant step in that direction. Apple’s next theatrical endeavor is Ridley Scott’s historic epic, Napoleon, set to open on November 22, right before Thanksgiving, and starring Joaquin Phoenix in the lead role.
