Sangeeta Bijlani: From Miss India to Bollywood Stardom and Beyond

Sangeeta Bijlani – The Journey of Bollywood Stardum!

Sangeeta Bijlani is an Indian actress, model and former beauty contestant who was born on 09 th July 1960 in Bombay (now Mumbai), Maharashtra, India. Her family is of Sindhi Hindu community.

Bijlani started off as a model when she was 16, and became one of the best known faces in India advertising. She appeared in many advertisements of popular products like Nirma and Pond soap giving her a dubious title of Bijli (the electrician). The pinnacle of her achievement in the modeling industry came as she was crowned the Femina Miss India of 1980. After this win, she also went on to participate in Miss Universe 1980 in Seoul, South Korea where she won the award of the best national costume which was designed by her mother Poonam Bijlani.

The beauty pageants made her land in the Bollywood film industry. Bijlani started her acting career in 1988, in a movie Qatil, starring opposite Aditya Pancholi. She was later recognized extensively after the multi-starrer blockbuster tridev (1989) in which she partnered the other two females. In her 9-year career (1988-1997) in films, she created many memorable performances in the films such as Hathyar (1989), Jurm (1990), Yodha (1991), Vishnu- Devaa, Izzat and Lakshman Rekha. She has also appeared in a bi-lingual movie in Hindi and Kannada with an actor Vishnu Vardhan. She was nominated in the category of Filmfare Award for Best Supporting Actress; Jurm.

In addition to her film career, Sangeeta Bijlani also joined in the television industry where she made her TV debut in the serial Chandni in the early months of 1996. She created comic serials too such as Hasna Mat and Kinarey Milte Nahi.

Sangeeta Bijlani’s really only significant personal relationship was with actor Salman Khan. There is widespread press that they dated in 1986 when they were both modeling and were together for ten years approximately. It was even rumored that they would get married when ‘save the date’ cards were allegedly sent out before they fell apart. On November 14, 1996, Sangeeta Bijlani married former Indian cricket player Mohammad Azharuddin, then were married for 14 years before divorcing in 2010.

Aside from a few brief appearances for Salman Khan related to his charitable organization ‘Being Human’, and the need she had to explore her spiritual side, Sangeeta Bijlani has not been in the media ever since the mid-1990s. Despite not working in the film industry as an actress professionally, Sangeeta Bijlani is a well established name throughout India that is known for being pretty, was a successful model, and was known for being a Bollywood actress at the time when she was working.
