Sabrina Carpenter Considers Banning Phones at Concerts to Boost Live Experience

Sabrina Carpenter opens up about possibly banning phones at concerts, citing better audience connection and a more immersive experience.

Why Sabrina Carpenter Might Ban Phones at Her Concerts — And How Fans Are Reacting to Her Bold Move

Sabrina Carpenter, a pop star in the making who has hits to her credit such as “Espresso” and “Please Please Please,” has stirred a fierce discussion in the music scene by saying that she might put a phone ban in effect at her forthcoming concerts. In a recent interview with Rolling Stone, the singer, 26, stated that she would “absolutely” consider a no-phone policy, even if it might “piss off” some of her fans. Her reason? A concert experience that is more intimate and connected and which she had most recently at one of her own concerts.

She had her phone locked away in a pouch when she went to see Silk Sonic (Bruno Mars and Anderson .Paak) perform in Las Vegas, and it left quite an impression on her. “I’ve never had a better experience at a concert,” she said. “It really, really just felt so beautiful. Everyone’s singing, dancing, looking at each other, and laughing. It genuinely felt like I was back in the Seventies — wasn’t alive, but it felt like I was there.”

The reality is that, while growing up with a phone camera flashing in every concert arena, Carpenter cannot really say that capturing a moment to post is not anything else. “It unfortunately feels super normal to me. I can’t blame people for wanting to have memories,” she said. But it just keeps intriguing her with the thought of giving audiences a show about just being there.

Indeed, Sabrina Carpenter wasn’t immediately drawn by the no-phone concept. She hinted that it will depend on the stage of her life and career. “Right now, my skin is soft and supple. It’s fine,” she joked. “Do not zoom in on me when I’m 80 years old up there.”

It is inevitable, of course, that what the singer said attracted mixed reactions from fans and non-fans. Some believe that the idea is unreal. “‘Bad idea for people with responsibilities. What if something really important happened?’ said one user on social media. Another said: ‘People should be able to do whatever they want. They pay money to go to concerts.’

However, there were those who supported the argument that Sabrina was putting forward. Most fans felt and endorsed Carpenter’s idea and expressed frustration over a mass of smartphones in the venue at live shows. “I love this idea because I went to one of her concerts and could barely see her because of everyone’s phones,” read one comment. “All phones should be banned at concerts. Everyone should live in the moment,” another fan wrote.

Carpenter was also very open beyond the phone argument. She talked about the different expectations put on female artists in the public limelight. With this cover photo for her song “Man’s Best Friend,” critics came after Carpenter. Here, she appears in a black dress, positioned on her hands and knees, while someone off-camera pulls her hair. Critics quickly pounced on the image, what Carpenter sees as a broader systemic critique in the music industry of women:

“I truly feel like I’ve never lived in a time where women have been picked apart more,” she said. “The second you see a picture of someone wearing a dress on a carpet, you have to say everything mean about it in the first 30 seconds.”

As she continues her rise in popularity in the pop field, Sabrina Carpenter is not making waves only because of her music- she is also living out a new experience in how fans experience it. Actually, whether or not a no-phone policy materializes, there is certainly one subtitle that’s been cleared: she is totally serious in creating genuine, unforgettable live moments.
