Legendary Tamil, Telugu and Hindi film director K Viswanath has passed away in Hyderabad. He was almost 93 years old. Winner of the Dada Saheb Phalke award, five national honours, seven Nandi awards and 10 filmfare awards, Vishwanath is best remembered for his iconic 1980 film Sankarabharanam which was incidentally released on this same date. Regarded and called by many as escalades, among his well known films are Sankarabharanam, Saptapadi and Swayam Krushi.
Swathi Muthayam, which starred Kamal Hassan, was India’s official entry for the best foreign language film at the 59th academy awards.

Sankarabharanam(1981)
Sankarabharanam is a Telugu musical drama film. The movie deals with a famous Carnatic singer ‘Sankarabharanam’ Sankara Sastry. Sankarabharanam created numerous records at a theatrical run and poured in many national and international awards for the film. In 1981, the film won the Prize of the Public at the “Besançon Film Festival of France”. The poll conducted by CNN-IBN, Sankarabharanam came eleventh for finding the “greatest Indian film ever” in 2013.
SUBHA SANKALPAM (1995)
Kamal Haasan and Aamani starred in Subha Sankalpam, which won five Nandi Awards. K Viswanath directed the film and made his acting debut with a critical role. Interestingly, Kamal Haasan was instrumental in convincing him to act in Subha Sankalpam.
Saptapadi (1981)
Saptapadi is considered one of the most beloved classic movies. Starring Allu Rama Lingaiah, JV Somayajulu, and P Ravi Shankar, the film received the Nandi Award for Best Screenplay, National Film Award for Best Feature Film on National Integration and the Filmfare Award for Best Film – Telugu. It was screened at the International Film Festival of India and the AISFM film festival. Decades after the film’s release, Saptapadi is often regarded as a cinematic masterpiece.
Neramu Siksha (1973)
Viswanath took up the work of screenplay, writing, and direction for this movie. This story, led by Bharathi and Krishna, is about a wealthy businessman’s reckless and indulgent life. When the man gets a new car as a gift, he goes in a race with his friends, injuring two brothers. The remaining movie details his penance.
Sirivennela (1986)
‘Sirivennela’ is a romance movie starring Suhasini and Sarvadaman Banerjee. The story is about a blind flautist who rises to fame and gains recognition as Pandit Hari Prasad. A mute painter, played by Suhasini, meets and falls in love with him.
