Rajasthan on Red Alert as Heatwave Intensifies; Delhi Records Season’s Hottest Day

Severe Heatwave Scorches North India: Rajasthan and Delhi Under Weather Alerts
India’s northwest and east are still experiencing extreme heatwave conditions with Delhi recording its hottest day of the season on Tuesday and regions of Rajasthan suffering from extreme heat.
Numerous states continue to have orange and yellow alerts in effect as the heat and humidity increase the discomfort. The India Meteorological Department reports that the oppressive heat has been made worse by residual moisture left behind by the recent western disturbances diminishing influence. Conditions are predicted to get worse over the next few days as the monsoon has not yet reached northwest India.
It’s the Hottest Day of the Season in Delhi
Delhi saw a maximum temperature of 43°C on Tuesday which was 3°C higher than the season’s average. On Monday the IMD declared the capital city to be under an orange alert through Wednesday. The IMD predicts that Delhi will experience extremely hot weather and a heatwave through at least June 12. According to the IMD Wednesdays daytime high will be approximately 45 degrees Celsius and the evenings will be warm with highs of 29 degrees. With the IMD predicting light rainfall thunderstorms and gusty winds of 30 to 40 kmph in some areas of Delhi there might be some respite beginning on June 12.
The State of Rajasthan is on Red Alert
Western Rajasthan is experiencing a severe heatwave with temperatures in Ganganagar rising above 47 degrees for two days in a row. Over the next few days the heatwave is predicted to continue. For two days June 11 and 12 IMD has issued a red alert for a heatwave. In West Rajasthan an orange alert has been issued for June 13. A yellow alert has been issued for the same day in East Rajasthan. In the meantime Rajasthan might see thunderstorm activity from June 15 – 16 which could provide some respite from the heat. In eastern Rajasthan a temperature drop is anticipated between June 18 and 20 as a result of thunderstorm activity.
Ludhiana is Under a Yellow Alert
IMD issued a yellow alert for a heatwave in Ludhiana from Tuesday through Thursday. Monday’s high in Ludhiana was 44° Celsius and according to the IMDs weekly forecast the highest temperature will remain above 40° Celsius until June 16. Although a major change in the weather is not anticipated after three days, Surender Paul the director of IMDs Chandigarh centre stated that there was a chance of mild thunderstorms and even light rain in certain areas which would lower the temperatures to almost normal if not below.

High Temperatures in the Hill Stations of the Himalayas
A number of stations throughout the hill state continued to report temperatures above normal on Tuesday with Una in Himachal Pradesh recording the highest maximum temperature at 44°C. On Tuesday the states average maximum temperature stayed above average. The temperatures in a number of well-known hill stations such as Manali and Shimla are noticeably higher than usual. According to MeT department officials dry weather is predicted to last until June 12 in every district of the state. On June 13 and 14 however there is a chance of light rainfall in a few locations throughout the state.
