Pant’s Nasty Foot Injury: England Tour In Doubt.

Rishabh Pant Likely Ruled Out Of England Tour After Foot Injury

Indian cricket team lieutenant wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant picked up a gnarly foot injury during Day 1 of the ongoing 4th Test against England at Old Trafford, throwing a sizable cloud over his availability throughout the rest of the series and also during the games later on.

This was as Pant played a confident 37 off 48 balls when he tried a reverse sweep against England pacer Chris Woakes. The delivering was lost, and the ball hit off him immediately on his right boot. It was highly dramatic, with Pant dropping instantly to the ground writhing in agony.

Officials ran to assist him and camera lenses zoomed up close and could be seen bulging and actually some blood came out on his foot. Pant fell to the ground but could not put any weight on it as he had to be carried out of the field by the physio and was finally carried out on the medical cart, out of the stadium on an ambulance, to undergo scans. His apparent suffering and the display of unpleasant images have caused severe concerns on the Indian camp and by fans.

This is a major setback considering that Pant had been already battling with a finger injury which he had sustained in the last Test, and cost him some responsibilities as a wicketkeeper. This latest blow casts his availability in the category of serious doubt because he was scheduled to be back behind the stumps this match.

Early reports and comments from experts and former cricketers, including Ricky Ponting and Michael Atherton, have indicated that this injury might be a metatarsal fracture – a kind of injury to the bones of the foot, which can take a player out for a long time. Ponting, himself a victim of a metatarsal injury in the past, explained that there was significant swelling straight away and noted that Pant couldn’t put any weight on it, which seemed there were ominous signs from there.

The BCCI has been in touch and confirmed that Pant’s medical team took him for scans and medical management of the injury has begun, no further updates have been provided as there is still observation. An official announcement of the nature of the injury and the severity will be made on the basis of the Clinical Evaluation. However, the early signs from the commentary of what was seen were ominous and observers strongly think he may not return not only from this match, but be further sidelined for the entire England Tour.

To lose Rishabh Pant at this point for India would be an absolute disaster, given that his aggressive batting style and role behind the stumps was unique to the English Conditions and further would require more adaptations to the balance of the team at the start of the series.
