Movie Review: MC Mary Kom

Star Rating : 4 and half

Crisp, quick and creative to the core, MC Mary Kom, the biopic movie has done complete justice in portraying the passion, problems, struggles and success moments of the Indian world boxing champion, Mary Kom. The movie is a great example of how a good film maker can take you through the making of a legend in just a couple of hours. Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s creativity as a movie maker is par excellence. Be it the screenplay, direction or the dialogues, every angle has been perfectly defined and the movie gives out the right message to its audience, who leave the hall wanting more.

And, if you thought a biopic of an Indian athlete is all about training and competing, you are in for some real surprises. Kudos to Director Omung Kumar and writer Saiwyn Quadras, who have packaged the movie beautifully, not leaving any important aspect of her life and focusing on just the right aspects of her life that have the potential to catch the nerve of the audiences. The movie is nothing short of a Bollywood masala film with emotions, actions and dialogues all at the right places.

Right from the start till the end the movie is gripping in its screenplay and Priyanka Chopra’s hard work has definitely paid off. She has acted very well to clone herself as Mary Kom, even surprising at the right diction, many a times in her dialogues! Darshan Kumar who has played the role of Onler Kom, Mary’s husband and Sunil Thapa who has played coach Narijit Singh have also justified their roles perfectly.

The action which is all about Mary’s attitude whether its her anger in the ring or off it, are well directed and gets your adrenaline gushing at just the right moments. The action scenes, which illustrate the in-the-ring boxing sequences, have been coordinated by Rob Miller of ReelSports, the sports action director of Chak De! India and Bhaag Milkha Bhaag and trust me, you will not be disappointed.

The good part is you get to see the biopic of a sports legend, who has hasn’t aged yet and is still practicing, which I believe is good as a motivation to many and the better part is, it makes many a people realize that Manipur is a part of India and they make the country proud!

The chaos was to be seen when Priyanka introduced Mary Kom with the people. She said, “Today, we can see the boxing lady of India in just front of us. She is the real Mary Kom, I am just performing her in a film”.

The story in the film reflects the journey of a woman boxer who gave up her sporting career when it was at its peak to embrace the joy of motherhood. How world forgot her and how she proved herself even after giving birth to two beautiful children is to be.

Ajit Andhare, COO, Viacom Motion Pictures said, “Mary Kom is unique film that celebrates a living legend, as she continues her quest to bring laurels to the country. This miniature model of Mary will serve as a lifetime memento, an ode to Mary”.
