Kuch Kuch Hota Hai: Karan Johar left India when “Kuch Kuch Hota Hai” was released due to security concerns, recalling, “I would often find tears welling up.”

Karan Johar reminisces about the release of his debut film, a time when he was unable to remain in India to witness the audience's reactions.

Kuch Kuch Hota Hai: Karan Johar remembers the moment he couldn’t watch “Kuch Kuch Hota Hai” in his own country, alongside the audience.

In a recent interview with Pinkvilla, Karan Johar shared that he couldn’t watch his directorial debut, “Kuch Kuch Hota Hai,” with the Indian audience. Threatening calls forced him to leave the country with his parents. This revelation comes as the film celebrated its 25th anniversary, featuring Salman Khan, Shah Rukh Khan, Kajol, and Rani Mukerji in the lead roles.
Karan Johar had to leave India before the premiere of “Kuch Kuch Hota Hai” due to some security concerns. He shared that he shot a significant portion of the film on his 25th birthday and described the film’s release on October 16, 1998, as a surreal moment. Unfortunately, he couldn’t be present for the release because of threatening calls received at that time. For safety reasons, he, along with his parents, had to fly out on the opening night. As a result, he never had the chance to watch the film in India. Instead, he relied on friends who would call him and hold the phone to the audience during key moments in the film, which brought tears to his eyes as he missed out on the experience of witnessing it himself.
Karan mentioned that he did watch the film in London a couple of times, but it didn’t provide the same feeling as seeing it with an Indian audience. He expressed sadness over not having the opportunity to experience the film alongside his home country’s audience.
He returned to India six weeks later, and during the awards season, “Kuch Kuch Hota Hai” received major accolades. Karan vividly recalled the moment of winning his first Filmfare award, describing it as breathtaking. He expressed his inability to put that feeling into words because it was an “impossible dream” he had as a child. Karan also conveyed his gratitude to the universe for making it all happen.
“Kuch Kuch Hota Hai,” which hit the screens in 1998, not only garnered numerous awards but also earned high praise from both critics and viewers. The movie featured prominent actors like Anupam Kher, Johny Lever, and Archana Puran Singh in significant roles.
